@Durf@JDMayger Ah yes, the ol “we’d like you to proofread & revise this JP - EN translation, but you’re not allowed to change anything.” Literally the bane of anyone who’s ever done translation work in Japan.
The thing that started turning the world against China wasn't Covid, or Xinjiang, or Taiwan threats, etc.
It was the crushing of Hong Kong.

Some news after a busy Fall 2022:
1. Previously Tokyo-adjacent, I now reside in Tokyo proper
2. Revising my Geopolitical Demography research to be more “data-driven” (ML)
3. Got Moderna BA.4-5 booster today #Vaccinated#ワクチン完了
Hope to be more active w/ more to share in 2023
Remember that study about how canceling APSA-New Orleans led to worse outcomes for scholars outside top tier schools? That’s what the implosion of academic Twitter will mean—maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but over the medium term
I gotta say this is where the Muskmageddon hits me the hardest…as someone just starting in academia, in a far off country, with limited/no opportunities for conferences or networking, academic Twitter has been essential for helping fill those gaps and won’t be easily substituted
Lost a furry friend today.
My parent’s dog Sadie passed away after a long battle w/ Cushing’s.
She was a good girl, shy, but very loving, who liked to go for walks, hang out under the couch, & chase squirrels.
She would have made a great scholar of international canine relations
Especially given it harms as many (particulary small/mid size) firms as it helps (large exporters)...
Not an economist but I think its time to start considering taxing corporate savings & or laws requiring higher profits to translate to higher wages/be reinvested domestically.
A “surprise” but also not a surprise.
The trajectory of the Yen & BOJ’s “low rates until “good” inflation” stance has felt increasingly untenable for a while now.
“Abe/Kuroda-nomics” problem has always been the lack of consequent, meaningful wage growth to go WITH inflation.
IMHO, if Japan really wants “good inflation,” it’s going to have to do a lot more than just “shame” companies into raising wages. Companies taking home record JPY profits while the average person see’s their purchasing power stagnate/decline should increasingly be a non starter.
@PhillipLipscy Given the nature of the event, this was probably the right call for the Emperor. Not standing out from other high profile mourners, especially the British Royal Family, while avoiding action that could be taken as implicitly critical of the UK, seems like smart optics & politics
@PaulJNadeau I couldn’t agree more.
I explicitly remember being utterly bewildered seeing those images on TV along w/ sympathetic rhetoric from Iran’s leadership & then hearing “Iran” is part of the “axis of evil” in the 2002 State of the Union…Even at 14 our Iran policy seemed nonsensical…
Brief addendum. I can only imagine what it must have been like to see all that she saw from the vantage point from which she saw it. To know her thoughts, feelings, & honest reactions to the pivotal events of the past century would be to know so much of human history & experience
Sad day for the British Royal Family, the UK & the World.
Living for 96 years & ruling for 70, Queen Elizabeth saw & presided over a significant majority of modern history & the entire post WWII era(until today.) The meaning of her life & loss will reverberate for years to come.
Looking for advice from anyone familiar with wood/property. Was looking at an apartment in Tokyo & upon showing some people the walkthrough they said these marks in the closet could be water absorption & that I should inquire with the management company.
@koreanforeigner Yeah. Australia was “supposed” to be Japan’s first big export customer after they revised their arms export policy.
A lot of work went into the Soryu sub offer & Japan still hasn’t managed to nab a contract for such a large weapon system. Hence I can’t imagine they’d be pleased…
