The trouble I encounter in reviewing opinion articles is trying to buffer opinion.

Example: "The attempt by the authors of “The 1776 Report” to beg absolution from the political left for the sin of slavery is a fatal miscalculation"

I didn't see anything in the report that begged absolution for sin.

What I read was the foundation that applauds our ability to alter our political structure to evolve. I didn't see penitence, but I wasn't looking at it in that light as I'm not drawn by emotion. He goes on to expand on the perils of unjustified apology, but that isn't the root point. It certainly makes his case, but I don't see its necessity.
