Study of calls in this New Zealand wren from a species-poor suborder that's sister to passerines.
Today is my final lecture for my first full fledged ecology course. Bittersweet - I knew I liked teaching when I was graduate student, but this semester really cemented that
- Depression sets in.
I've emailed the fine folk on the program officer team for the PRFB, but that was at 4:45 PM so I'm trying to be patient. Unfortunate - all my application material is timed stamped as submitted pre 5PM my local time. So... fingers crossed.

- NSF PRFB due at 5 PM local time. NBD.
- I go to submit it at 3 PM - turns out single spaced it too single spaced (no more than 6 lines per inch). Ok sure, I have time, NBD. Spend an hour cutting down content.
- It is now 4:10 (ish). Go to hit submit. Error #2 -
My time zone is still set to as central time (from my PhD). I'm Mountain. Ok, let's fix that.
- No, you can't. Call NSF help desk.
- Ok, I do. It is now 4:15 ish. They cannot change it, submit help ticket.
- 5 PM rolls around, application not submitted.

Big news! We received NSF funding and we're now looking for a PhD student to help us study the ecogeography of social behavior in fairywrens. The student will be co-advised by Dai Shizuka and Allison Johnson. Details here: https://t.co/kD9gRWnvLr
Finding a bird laying on the ground next to building entirely surrounded by clear windows is heart wrenching. On a university campus with students walking within inches of ending the poor thing no less.
How is it 2023 and we have not systematically addressed this issue?
Karan Odom’s lab at University of the Pacific is seeking Master's students interested in studying the hormonal and genetic regulation of female song and evolutionary drivers of sexual dimorphism in birdsong. See https://t.co/ehdlPbndYo for more information!
