Although it's not yet an official celebration, May 8th was chosen to celebrate Gohan's day because of a wordplay with his name. In Japanese, the number 5 is pronounced "go," while the number 8 is pronounced "hachi." By combining these two numbers, the name "Gohan" is formed.
