My prayers are with Phil’s family. A legend in Michigan, across @MLB, and in the Latin American countries where he managed, coached, and truly embraced the culture. Phil grew up in a small town; played with Kaline, Koufax & Drysdale; spoke Spanish fluently; coached deGrom.
Tonight, we join the baseball world in honoring the life and memory of West Michigan’s own Phil Regan.
Phil Regan was the manager of the West Michigan Whitecaps during the 2002 and 2003 seasons and played an important role in the history of our organization.

A no-BS look at O's trade deadline with @jonmorosi. Why they will sell. Why Adley and Holliday must go. Why Jackson shoulda been gone 2 yrs ago. How could "insiders" do top 50 trade target lists w/o Adley on it? Hmm. How far is #birdland from contending

Phil was the first manager I covered on a daily basis, with the 2003 @wmwhitecaps. He took time to share stories with me and explain in-game decisions. I was a 21-year-old intern at the @GRPress. Those conversations meant so much. Grateful for the impact he made on my life.
Beyond the field, Phil was respected throughout the baseball community for his dedication to his players, his teammates, and the game he loved.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones.

What sets Dillon Dingler apart?
“He’s got this little notebook,” Skubal said. “He keeps it with him everywhere. I’m walking in today. He’s got it on the ping-pong table. He’s going over their team vs. left-handed pitching, their team vs. right-handed pitching, writing down notes with everything. That’s the homework that gives me a ton of confidence in how he calls games. That’s why I don’t really shake. I don’t think there’s a point to it.”
Tarik Skubal on @Tigers catcher Dillon Dingler:
“He should start the All-Star Game. He’s the best catcher in baseball, no doubt. Go look at every single number. He should be the one behind the dish. The guy on the other side is very good, too, but I think [Dingler] is the best catcher in baseball. He’s got every number to back it up. It’s not just an opinion. It’s a fact.”

Tarik Skubal's night is done after 5 IP and 1 ER.
He has a 3.62 ERA in 5 starts since surgery.
Skubal threw 96 pitches; the last time he went beyond 100 was Game 1 of last year's Wild Card Series in Cleveland.

History in Detroit tonight:
Kevin McGonigle has reached base multiple times on 53 occasions before the All-Star Game.
That is a new @MLB record, surpassing the mark set by Aaron Judge in 2017.
@MLBNetwork
The A's are making Skubal work.
78 pitches through 4 innings.
Still, Skubal has allowed only 1 run -- while standing 5 runners over the last 3 innings.
@MLBNetwork
Tarik Skubal looks like a man who wants to make a statement tonight.
He struck out the side in the first inning. All swinging.
Consistently hitting 97 mph with his fastball.
Devastating changeup at 90 mph.
