I’ve read this line so often in recent days – a sort of guilt-reaction following the death of Jason Arday – and I find it dreadful drivel. Arday was a gentle, sensitive, complex man, whose life ended in tragedy. But you could not stop ordinary people being fascinated by his story. Here was a man who constructed remarkable fabrications – some of them ludicrous – about both his life and his academic achievements. I lost count of the number of ordinary, decent people who had said to me in recent weeks: “This story is amazing. Have you seen it? How was this allowed to happen?” Papers like The Guardian and The Times knew that people found the story incredible, and I for one found it compelling reading.
I’m not a racist. I found the Arday story captivating on various levels and I kept reading. And then, on Friday evening, I felt heartbroken at the terrible news.
Are we to stop being interested, intrigued, curious, and ultimately amazed?
