On This Day in 2004: Cassini’s Stunning Close Encounter with Phoebe!
As NASA’s Cassini spacecraft made its final approach to Saturn, it zipped past the mysterious moon Phoebe on June 11, 2004, capturing our first high-resolution close-up from just 2,068 km (1,285 miles) away.Phoebe stands out dramatically from Saturn’s other moons. It orbits nearly four times farther out than its closest neighbor, follows a highly inclined retrograde path (orbiting backwards relative to most moons), and is strikingly dark — reflecting only about 6% of sunlight. All these clues led scientists to conclude that Phoebe isn’t a native Saturnian moon at all. Instead, it’s a captured Centaur — an icy wanderer from the distant Kuiper Belt that got snared by Saturn’s gravity billions of years ago.A true outsider in the Saturn system!
What an incredible first look at this ancient visitor from the outer solar system.
