It is still unclear who can help Kyiv defend its skies from Russian missiles: allies are reluctant to part with interceptors because their own stockpiles are also running low.

For five days leading up to September 1, Kyiv was attacked almost hourly by waves of jet-powered drones followed by ballistic missiles.

Russia uses drones to overwhelm Ukrainian radar networks before launching missiles.

PAC-3 MSE production is ramping and the near-term ramp is funded. 800 +/- this year, and likely 1,000+ next year. The current administration wants to ramp to 2,000 a year for the MSE and Lockheed Martin is working with its European customers on the PAC-3 ACE on top of that. And PAC-2 GEM/T production in the US and soon in Europe. Second and third source suppliers are being stood up to accommodate that ramp rate and planned new variants. Missiles are being actively developed or fielded that sit above and below it in capability to relieve the stress on its fire units. It is a program in active funded growth. Many of you know me as a defense reporter who spent years breaking bread with Ukrainian soldiers in trenches.

A blood illness gradually made both that work and military service impossible, so I poured all my passion, my experience, and my love for this country into this book.

It is a journey through more than 1,000 years of our people’s history—from the forest-dwelling Slavic pagan tribes to the princes of ancient Kyiv and the Cossacks of the steppe frontier, through the catastrophes of the 20th century, and into our own age of revolutions and resistance.

This is no history textbook, nor is it just another popular history of Ukraine. What emerged surprised even me. It is a lyrical, epic portrait of Ukraine—its folk memory, myths, symbols, age-old legends, songs, poetry, and sacred places such as Saint Sophia of Kyiv—all that binds people into a nation today.

Ukraine is a land with a deeply complicated history, coveted by many over the centuries, its tragic chapters marked by cruelty and bloodshed.

For centuries, this land has been watered with tears and has repeatedly lost its freedom. Yet Ukraine lived on. Today, Russian propaganda seeks to reduce Ukraine to “Russia’s backyard” or “Little Russia”—an “artificial state” with no culture, language, or history of its own.

In this book, I show that Ukraine has a far greater place in human history and a story to tell, particularly through the lives of some of its remarkable figures, such as Prince Volodymyr, who brought Christianity to the shores of ancient Kyiv, or Serhiy Korolyov, whose genius sent the first human being (and a beautiful Ukrainian song!) into space; or Georgiy Gongadze, the father of modern Ukrainian journalism, whose martyrdom changed this country’s fate forever.

And all of this is illustrated with drawings by Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s great national poet and artist—spiritual father and prophet of the Ukrainian people.

This book is written from the perspective of my generation of Ukrainians, who came to believe in this country, resolved to make it a better place, and are now fighting to save it in Europe’s most terrible war of aggression since World War II.

For us, this is also a land of hope—the hope that we can finally break this cruel cycle of history, defend this country’s freedom and independence, and secure the right to pursue happiness in our own home.

My deepest hope is that one day people will say: “If you want to understand Ukraine, why it fought that war, and why it inspired so many around the world, read this book.”
