We came out with the win against a very tough Portland team last night, let’s keep it going ladies, catch us tomorrow night against Grand Ledge @ELHoops@PrepGirlsHoops@pgh_Danyle
Portland scored the first 7 points of the game and got the margin as high as 13 in the 1st qtr at 17-4. They led 19-8 after scoring the first 2 points of the 2nd qtr, but foul trouble was mounting with 3 of their starters picking up their 2nd foul in the qtr. East Lansing responded by attacking the paint offensively, picking up their on-ball pressure defensively, and crashing the boards as they outscored Portland 21-3 over the final 7 minutes of the half to take a 29-22 advantage into intermission.
East Lansing built the margin up to 10, but Portland scored the final 5 of the period to cut it to 38-33. Both teams found scoring tough early in the 4th as Portland pulled within 39-35 around the midway point of the final period, but EL scored the next 6 to build the lead back to 10. After a couple of 2-pt exchanges, East Lansing takes a hard-fought 49-39 victory.
East Lansing was led by the aggressive trio of jr Sydney Black (pictured, #11-r), soph Nandi Gordon (#12), and fr Olivia Adarkwa (#3), who combined for 39 points to match Portland's total as well as 19 of EL's 21 points in the key 2nd qtr stretch. Black attacked the basket and the boards aggressively, and earned many trips to the FT line, in tallying a 12-&-13 double-double. Gordon completed 2 old-fashioned 3-pt plays, and hit a 3 from behind the arc, in scoring a game-high 15 points, while adding 4 steals. Adarkwa added 12 more points, including 6 of their final 10 over the last 4 minutes to help seal the win. Soph Jordan Mendenhall was also key in EL's increased intensity over the last 3 quarters as she came off the bench to hustle her way to 6 steals and 4 rebounds. [It was also inspirational to see sr Ari James (@_ariyanajames ) back on the court after missing almost her whole academic year as a senior last year after a major medical scare. James is now re-classified as a 2026.]
For Portland, jr Aaleigha Roberson (pictured, #30) played strong and physical inside in posting a 14-&-10 double-double, along with 4 steals and 3 blocked shots. Sr Lake Superior State signee Lilly Thelen (#11-l) hit a trio of 3s and scored her 1000th career points on a 2nd qtr FT as she added 11-&-8. Sr Summer Stopczynski also had a solid all-around game with 6 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals.
