You might have to beg, pawn a few things, lose a few people, shed a few tears, get heartbroken, hear a bunch of NO’s, walk out on that comfortable job to get where you want to Go. Gods promise happens when you don’t stop keep trusting him stop worrying & keep those feet moving!
Reflections from a retired Head Football Coach who started 6 - 38, kept his job, then won a conference championship and was named national coach of the year.
Continually communicate the vision.
Live the vision.
Remain faithful despite tough times.
Over Promise in order to Over Deliver
Love unconditionally!
Lose or win always show your team how they are moving forward to fulfilling the vision.
Listen. You never know where a good idea will come from. Boosters parents players administrators all they want is for you to listen to what they have to say and respond in a manner that reflects that you appreciate their interest in your program.
Evaluate, recruit, retain and develop.
Catch players and staff doing things right. Nothing is more motivating than encouragement and praise.
Limit corrections to things that are critical. Correct the critical. Fix the fixable.
Do the little things. Make sure your players go to class. Go to other teams sporting events. Etc etc
Actively seek out people essential to the program to visit with even after a loss. President, Athletic Director, and boosters.
Maintain contact with players’s parents. Give them encouraging news to keep them motivating their kids to continue to develop and improve and be a positive part of the program.
Coach for an audience of one. Be concerned with God thinks about you not what others think about you.
Don’t stop believing. Your positivity must overcome the negativities that others are putting into your players lives. Be a Tigger the world has enough Eeyores.
Stay the course. If you keep going forward, even if it’s in the wrong direction, you will eventually end up at the destination. However, if you keep changing courses, you will end up in the middle of nowhere.
Remove all sarcasm. You may think it’s funny, but to the players and people most connected to the program, it is not. There are better ways to get the message you need across.
You impact more people with the way you handle adversity than the way you enjoy victory.

There’s two types of coaches in this game:
1️⃣ The Developers
They love the grind.
They see a raw 10th grader and think, “Give me two years.”
They build habits, mindset, discipline, confidence.
They don’t just coach talent — they build it.
2️⃣ The Flex Coaches
They want the 4-star already polished.
They post the offers.
They celebrate the wins.
But they skip the ugly stages the drops, the bad footwork, the immaturity, the weight room growth.
Here’s the truth though…
Real ones develop.
And when development turns into production? That’s when you flex.
The best coaches I’ve seen don’t chase finished products. They create them.
So the real question isn’t which one are you…
It’s which one are your players becoming because of you?
Are they better after a season with you?
Stronger mentally?
More disciplined?
More accountable?
That’s development.
Christian Parker: You have to know "when to correct, when not to correct. Sometimes players gotta touch the stove. You just want to do it in a controlled environment."
LOVE that.
I am not ashamed of my journey. My life will be a testimony.
But if I could offer a word of advice to any freshman, sophomore or junior athlete in high school it would be to just listen bro. All them adults in your life not just talking to talk. They been here longer. They done bumped they head already. They trying to save you from doing the same thing.
Do not make the mistake of thinking your talent alone is enough. It’s not. Talent open doors. Character and grades keep you there. And if you already messed up, if your GPA not where it should be, if your name been in rooms for the wrong reasons… don’t quit. Keep digging. You can climb out the hole the same way you dug it.
Class of 29, 28 and 27 hear me.
Take your grades serious. Choose who you hang around wisely. Protect your name. Word spreads fast if you a crash out. Respect authority. Nobody riding for you like your parents and coaches. Work hard when nobody clapping.
Do not wait until senior year to lock in. That GPA do not lie.
I’m still figuring it out myself. I’m struggling but I know God got me.
Be intentional. Lock in early. Pray. Show up ready to work.
I’m learning the hard way that my future is being built in the small decisions I make today.
Start now.
