In the early hours this morning, the teams on #OceanViking rescued 26 people from a drifting fiberglass boat in the Maltese SRR. The distress alert was relayed by @alarmphone, Italian maritime authorities coordinated the SAR operation. Survivors report having spent 3 days at sea.

Yesterday night, 336 survivors disembarked from the #OceanViking in Ancona.

While we're relieved that they reached a place of safety, we remember the 60 women, men & children who perished along the way and all those who disappeared without a trace in the #Mediterranean.

After making several requests for a closer Place of Safety to disembark 359 survivors, Italian MRCC has settled for the transshipment of the 23 survivors who had spent 7 days at sea and are in vulnerable physical and psychological condition.

A legal appeal was launched against the detention & fine imposed on #OceanViking by Italian authorities last month.

@SOSMedIntl rejects the accusation of non-compliance & insists on upholding the duty to rescue even when coordination by responsible authorities is dysfunctional.

⚫️(1/2) This morning, 61 people drowned off the coast of Libya. The boat had departed from Zuwara, Libya with 86 people on board. The people reached out to @alarm_phone.

The contacted authorities, incl the so called libyan Coastguard, replied they would not look for the people.

After spending 6 days on #OceanViking, including 2 days sheltering from a storm, 26 survivors disembarked in Livorno this morning.

While ~1000kms had to be traveled to reach a Place of Safety, 61 people died off the coast of Libya, without any SAR asset around to save them.

As one result of the “Piantedosi Decree”, NGO ships risk detentions for conducting more than one rescue operation before disembarking survivors. Together with the assignment of faraway ports, the consequences have been dire.

Upon arrival in Ortona, the #OceanViking was issued with an order of 20 days detention and a penalty fee of 3,300€ for rescuing people at sea in Libyan SSR.
