She was 14 years old. All she had to do to go home was deny her faith. She refused.

On 19 February 2018, gunmen from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) stormed the Government Girls' Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe State, and abducted 110 schoolgirls. One of them was Leah Sharibu.

Five of the girls never survived the abduction. Former captives later said the girls died during the grueling journey after being crammed into the militants' vehicles, and that they were buried in the bush. Their bodies were never returned to their families, and no official report has ever conclusively established the exact circumstances of their deaths.

About a month later, the militants released 104 of the surviving girls. Leah was not among them.

According to her family, church leaders, and multiple officials involved in negotiations, the militants refused to release Leah because she declined to renounce her Christian faith and convert to Islam. The girls who returned gave the same account.

The militants reportedly told negotiators that she would remain in captivity because of her decision.

Later that year, a video of Leah surfaced. Looking into the camera, the teenage girl pleaded with Nigeria's president to help bring her home. The video spread around the world. She was still not rescued.

For years, her father, Nathan Sharibu, and her stepmother, Rebecca, have continued pleading publicly for her release.

Former captives who later escaped have repeatedly told Leah's family that she was forced into marriage and has given birth while in captivity. Although those reports have not been independently verified, they are consistent with the documented pattern of Boko Haram and ISWAP forcing abducted girls into marriages and motherhood against their will.

On 14 May 2026, Leah turned 23. She has now spent more of her life in captivity than she ever spent free. She remains the only one of the 110 Dapchi schoolgirls who was not released after the abduction and whose freedom has never been secured.
