THE FALL OF BARENTU 🇪🇹⚔️🇪🇷

On May 18, 2000, Ethiopian troops shattered Eritrean defenses and captured the strategic town of Barentu in western Eritrea. This was no minor skirmish—Barentu was the keystone of enemy supply lines, and its fall sent Isaias Afewerki's army into full retreat. The Ethiopian offensive rolled forward with devastating efficiency, breaking the back of a regime that had spent two years raining shells on Ethiopian cities.

THE 146 KILOMETERS ☝️

When the dust settled, Ethiopian forward units stood just 146 kilometers from Asmara—less than a day's march. The Eritrean capital lay effectively undefended; its military was shattered, its command in chaos. Total victory—the complete destruction of the Afewerki regime—was not a dream but a certainty. Then came the order that would haunt a generation: stop. Turn back. The ceasefire and subsequent Algiers Agreement froze the war just as Ethiopia was poised to end it forever.

THE BETRAYAL

For many Ethiopians—especially those who wore the uniform, which includes no less a person than Prime Minister Abiy himself—this was not peace. It was a betrayal of every soldier who had bled. The same brutal dictator in Asmara who started the war was allowed to survive, rebuild, and rule for another quarter-century. Our troops were called back because the compromised and treasonous political leadership of Meles Zenawi chose diplomacy over destiny. There will be no such foolishness next time. 🤔

A new desperate campaign is once again to be launched to rescue the TPLF from the consequences of the war it ignited. This gang group, which has for more than half a century been a curse upon Ethiopia, has repeatedly escaped accountability whenever the wars it ignites have brought it to the brink of collapse. At the critical moment, calls for “negotiation” have been used to provide it with an escape route, allowing it to regroup, rearm, and reorganize—while the Ethiopian people are left to bear the devastating and entirely unjustifiable costs.
The same pattern is now being repeated. Having launched yet another round of conflict with the declared objective of overthrowing the government and ultimately destabilizing and fragmenting the country, the TPLF Mafia group has understood, even before its campaign has properly begun, that it cannot achieve its stated objectives. It has, therefore, resorted once again to desperate appeals for rescue, disguising its plea for survival under the pretext of “negotiation.”
Those who support and enable the TPLF have readily seized upon this pretext and are now exerting intense lobby and pressure to secure another reprieve for the criminal gangs. Such efforts risk repeating the very cycle that has brought Ethiopia repeated conflict, instability, destruction, and loss of life.
History provides no compelling evidence that the TPLF has genuinely resolved fundamental political disputes through sincere negotiation. On the contrary, previous periods of accommodation have repeatedly been followed by renewed mobilization, confrontation, and conflict.
Ethiopia cannot afford to repeat this destructive cycle yet again. There should be no political arrangement designed merely to provide the TPLF with another opportunity to regroup and return to confrontation. The priority must be accountability, the dismantling of armed and destabilizing structures, and bringing individuals responsible for serious crimes before competent judicial institutions.
Any attempt to portray another temporary reprieve as a lasting solution would merely postpone the crisis and prepare the ground for another, potentially more destructive, confrontation. Ethiopia needs a durable political settlement based on constitutional order, accountability, justice, and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country—not another arrangement that allows an armed political organization to escape responsibility and reorganize for another round of conflict.
The people of Tigray, like every other Ethiopian people, have an undeniable right to live in freedom and dignity—to raise their children in peace, cultivate their land, prosper from the fruits of their own labor, and finally break free from the political hostage and decades-long captivity imposed upon them. They deserve to reclaim their fundamental rights, their freedom, and their future after five decades of being held hostage to the interests and ambitions of few mercenaries.

Leaders of TPLF Mafia have been engaged in mobilizing the people across the region, declaring that they will dismantle and bury Prosperity Party, so that the independence of Tigray will be guaranteed. They have been making it clear that their ultimate goal is to overthrow the Ethiopian government and disintegrate the country. By this logic, the TPLF is effectively asserting that it has no guarantee of survival unless the country called Ethiopia itself is dismantled. At this critical juncture, the TPLF has exposed the true purpose for which it was created. To thwart this destructive agenda, the government will have no alternative but to dispose the TPLF itself and save the country from the fragmentation and destruction being pursued by these mercenaries. Accordingly, the current military action should not repeat the political leniency of the past, which allowed an armed group that had already been defeated and dispersed twice to revive and regain strength under the guise of negotiations.
The objective of the present military action must therefore be clear: to eliminate the TPLF as a political and military force and thereby safeguard the survival, unity, and territorial integrity of Ethiopia.

After months of denying entering into an alliance with internal and external forces with an axe to grind against the Ethiopian federal government, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) leadership has now reached the point of publicly declaring that it has crossed the Rubicon, as it were. According to it, there is no peaceful resolution to the impasse with the federal government, and it has decided to resort to force. The goal is not to liberate Western Tigray as many of us have always assumed the objective to be-preferably and more legitimately peacefully-but, as the head of the TPLF secretariat put it, because "the security of the people of Tigray can only be assured on the grave of the Prosperity Party led regime." It is abhorrent that any politician, entrusted with the welfare of their own constituency would frame their security as contingent on the demise of a domestically elected government. Needless to say, this is not the language of a leader seeking to protect their people, but of one prepared to sacrifice them for a cause dressed up as their salvation.

In light of the TPLF leadership's well-documented tradition of sloganeering, I'd not have cared one bit if Debretsion and his ilk had just been repeating an old mantra. But unfortunately, there obviously is an evil principle at work here. The very leadership that has presided over Tigray's continued descent into the seemingly bottomless pit of tragedy is now flaunting in public its rather ungodly alliance with the very forces vehemently opposed to the Pretoria Agreement. The alliance, we are told, is ostensibly meant to achieve, by force, not the rather modest objective of the fullest implementation of Pretoria, such as the restoration of Tigray's constitutionally mandated territory, but more pointedly, the removal of the government in Addis Ababa.

Indeed, the TPLF leadership has now publicly articulated, as the mainstay of its repertoire for addressing differences with the federal government, what it had long denied: that it has been working with the regime in Asmara and other forces opposed to Addis Ababa. Whatever the characterization here, it is now an open secret that the goal posts have shifted and the ultimate goal is the overthrow of the federal government, consequences be damned. I don't lose sleep over whether such a goal is achievable. It is not; but the ramifications of such a futile effort for peace in the region in general and for the very existence of the people of Tigray in particular cannot be overstated. The dramatis personae in this so-called alliance makes it abundantly clear that, if allowed their way, they would stop at nothing to wreak unmitigated havoc on the entire region.

Recent events bear this argument out. Peace cannot survive hidden military maneuvers. The skirmish in Shererina has made it clear how high the stakes are in this game of brinkmanship the regime in Asmara, its junior partners within Ethiopia, and its external handlers are orchestrating. The large cache of munitions and weapons captured is proof positive that far from addressing the plight of the people of Tigray, dismantling the Ethiopian state is the ultimate objective in this dangerous game. Covert transfers of heavy military equipment into Tigray or other parts of the country represent a clear and present danger to stability efforts across the Horn of Africa. Despite TPLF leaders' claims, the number of lives needlessly lost during that half a day engagement foreshadows the enormity of the disaster lurking ahead not just for the people of Tigray but for the people of Ethiopia at large.

What should matter to the members of the Tigray army is the survival and peace of the people of Tigray, not the survival of a handful of criminals who have always considered waging war their retirement plan. To the rank and file: tell those who are frittering your lives away that enough is enough.
