Rian Johnson hid the answer to a $312 million murder mystery on the Blu-ray cover. In plain sight. For six years.
Johnson built the entire Knives Out franchise around an argument Hitchcock made in the 1960s: suspense beats surprise. Hitchcock hated the whodunit format because it withholds the answer until the end. You sit there collecting clues you can't interpret until a detective explains everything in the parlor scene. Johnson took the Columbo approach: reveal who did it 30 minutes into the film. Now every scene becomes unbearable because you're watching someone you care about get closer to being caught.
The cover does the same thing. The answer is right there in the design. You just have to flip your perspective. That's also exactly how the movie works.
$40 million budget. $312 million worldwide. Netflix paid $450 million for two sequels. Three quarters of a billion dollars in franchise value, built on one structural bet: the audience knowing the answer creates more tension than hiding it.
Johnson put the answer on the packaging and bet his budget that you'd have more fun already knowing. The 8x return says Hitchcock was right all along.
