What a lovely rehearsal tonight. Loads of saxes (always a good thing) a boss trombone and rhythm that simply redefined the section. We've pretty much covered all the new instrumentals - just two or three songs to add. Brilliant stuff and fantastic people. J
Just a quintet tonight, but full of quality. Great solos Mika & Mike, secure rhythm from Leonie & Mike and I had so much fun with the sticks. On hols next week, so the next rehearsal is 1st July. Keep cool. Jx
New charts are looking good and, after my smokin' performance, I think I'll have to take on the vocals for Big Spender. Superb solos in Aces and well done Mike for spotting the rogue Clarinet in Alto 1- Miller's fault.
Great atmosphere as usual. Best evening of the week. Jx
Continuing with refreshing our gig set tomorrow (yes, it's Tuesday for the next two weeks). Have a look at Mambo and Mambo Italiano. 2 more charts (American Patrol & Aces & Faces) which have lots of solos (have a listen online) and a few more songs. Think musical thoughts. J
Thanks for a solid rehearsal after the gig. Welcome to Mike on bass - a brilliant first session and hope there's many more to come. Excellent sight reading in the new stuff, particularly Heather - great songs. 3 cool solos from Mike, Mika & Joe at the end - what a sax line up! Jx
Instrumentals all sounding pretty good tonight - even subbing the bass for a bari sax, althoug there is something that a bass doesn't have to do: BREATHE!
Anyway, once resuscitated, it was clear we're good form. A superb vocal variety from S, B & (dare I say it) Me. Cheers J
What a cracker tonight. Definitely gig ready on the set charts. Great vocals from H and high quality solos across the band - (shout out to L on piano and G on trumpet 3) Instrumentals and male vocals next week. J
Good session tonight. We tried a few new charts and there are definitely some candidates for future gigs. Nice vocals from Bob and class solos across the band.
Cheers,
J
After a chance hearing on Radio 3, I'm really enjoying learning Grieg Opus 57 Lyric Pieces (x 6) for piano. Introspective and thoughtful. What a delight.
Tonight was quite simply, the best we've ever played! What a hugely enjoyable gig, with a good audience and a wonderful balance. Too many superstars to mention individually, but the band wouldn't have been as fantastic with even a single player missing. A week off now (22nd)
All the rhythm section were ace tonight - timing and energy, rock solid. Songbird was the pick. What a song - Sophie & Leonie - so special (and Mike and John...) Sweet Georgia, all so aware of when to play out and when to hold back. Really excited for the gig now. J
Great session tonight everyone. Thanks Alan, Mark and John for stepping in on Trumpet, Bone and Bass and welcome back to Steve. Awesome vocals Heather and the duets worked too (great fun for me!). A bit of a tight fit in that studio, but selective breathing worked fine. Cheers J
Intriguing rehearsal tonight featuring some of our more intimate charts: Mike & Adam with Black Orpheus, Sophie & Leonie (+) with Roberta Flack's The First Time (etc) and Lucy & John in Gershwin's Promenade. All brilliant interludes for the upcoming gigs. Superb talent.
Thanks for a great rehearsal everyone. Heather's fantastic vocals really shaped the songs and Sophie did a convincing interpretation of Roberta Flack's classic. Really good listening and intonation from everyone. I love
'articulations and slur' talk. See you next week. J x
Some nice warm sounds this evening. Brilliant solos all round (particularly Mike & Joe). Well done Gary for leading the trumpets and Joe G for some tricky trombone manoeuvres. Think about the rhythm in 'Things' - it needs to swing and fun. A full rhythm section too! J
Really enjoyable rehearsal tonight (that drummer is definitely getting better). Some great songs and charts. Solos were fantastic. Well done Mike & Bob and it was great to welcome Sam on Trombone. Back to Wednesdays from next week. J
Lots of good stuff tonight. Thanks John for stepping in on bass and wonderful solos from Leonie, Mike Joe and Joe kept us all going. That drummer added a certain je ne sais quoi (and had loads of fun in the process!!). Thanks everyone.
Pretty much one player per section tonight, but we still sounded great. Feelin' Good may, perhaps be under threat even though that singer was out of this world (or was it 'from another world'? I can't remember). Only 4 T-shirts left now (2 large and 2 medium). Collector's items.
