James W Gibson was born.
Without this man there's a very real possibility Manchester United wouldn't exist today.
His name should be as familiar to United fans as Busby, Ferguson, Charlton or Best.
Yet I'd wager a huge number of our supporters have never heard of him.
And that's a crying shame.
In December 1931 United were on the brink of bankruptcy.
The club had been relegated. Attendances had collapsed and things were so desperate United couldn't even afford to pay the players.
Christmas was approaching and the club was facing financial ruin.
Enter James W Gibson.
A successful businessman from Salford who stepped in with £2,000 to pay the players' wages and keep United alive.
He even ensured the players received their traditional Christmas turkeys!
But here's what makes his story so remarkable.
He didn't just save Manchester United. He helped build the foundations of everything that followed.
Gibson became chairman and invested heavily in the club.
He believed in developing young footballers and was instrumental in establishing United's youth development structure during the 1930s.
A tradition that would eventually produce the Busby Babes and the Class of '92.
When Old Trafford was devastated by German bombing in 1941 he helped secure the funding needed to rebuild our home.
Then in 1945 he made arguably his greatest decision.
He appointed a 36-year-old Matt Busby as manager and gave him the freedom to build United his way.
Three years later United lifted the FA Cup.
Sadly Gibson died in September 1951.
Just months before United became champions of England for the first time in 41 years.
He never saw the Busby Babes conquer English football.
He never witnessed the European Cup triumph in 1968.
He never saw Ferguson's dynasty or the Treble in Barcelona.
But without Gibson there's every chance none of it happens.
Think about that.
One man's decision to rescue a struggling football club in December 1931 helped change the course of football history.
Busby built a dynasty. Ferguson built another.
Gibson helped ensure there was a Manchester United for either man to manage.
One of the most important men in our club's history.
And a name every single United supporter should know.
Happy birthday James W Gibson.

@Cantona_Collars He really is fantastic. He faced off against the other wonderkid (Mastantuono) at the weekend when they played Fiorentina and Paz is just something else at the moment.
@Cantona_Collars Don’t you think Wilcox and the rest are stuck now? They have to give him time, if they don’t it doesn’t look like they’re serious operators and expose themselves for the sack as well?
@Cantona_Collars No matter which coach it’s been, every time we try to switch from a counter attacking approach to a possession approach it backfires. Seems like a perfect situation to go back to basics. I’m hoping for a big unexpected win
PSA after a pretty full-on week:
I hate every football club the same amount. This has always been the case, with two notable exceptions - I hate Southampton a little bit more and I hate Portsmouth a little bit less. Every other club is treated the same on @FootballRamble or any other football broadcast I do.
If any other club cheats the same way Man City have, my coverage will be the same. If I go and watch any other team that's as shit as Spurs are, the coverage will be the same. I call it as I see it. That's it.
If you feel differently, you need to examine your own prejudice. That'll usually start with the club you support.
Have a great weekend! And I sincerely hope your team loses in a comedy fashion this weekend. It just makes my job a bit easier.
Lisandro Martinez’s view that Michael Carrick has been sold short and the squad has not been equipped with the depth to fight on multiple fronts is shared by several senior players - and football staff. It has been discussed in the dressing room with the club aware of frustrations around recruitment.
There was a fear ahead of the campaign that the squad would not be strengthened properly - the lack of cover at left-back and striker were major concerns, which is evidenced in how much the need for reinforcements was stressed during pre-season interviews.
Told the driving reason behind Martinez’s airing these grievances publicly is fury that Carrick is likely going to lose his job despite not being given the tools to have a fair crack, and players are sick of reset after reset, without questions asked of the people in charge and what direction they’re taking the club in.
Carrick and the team have faced criticism, accepted it, and owned up to performances being nowhere near good enough.
Where is the accountability from the people who keep leading the club to one doom spiral after another?
@Cantona_Collars Idk, Lisandro might have bought him the entire season with his comments. 😂 I’d be very surprised is they discipline Licha. It’s clear to see that the board are the ones under pressure now.
An absolutely ridiculous assertion from quite literally the most clueless pundit in the game. The apex of your broadcasting career was having the piss constantly ripped out of you by Henry and Ibrahimovic during the World Cup. This kind of thing is why. The American football watching public deserve far better.
