Antarctica is colder and more icebound today than at any point in the past 5,000 years.
Research by Hall (2023) found that West Antarctica cooled by more than 1.8C between 1999 and 2018.
Satellite data confirm continent-wide cooling, as do multiple glacier studies.
Piccini (2024) found the Collins Glacier was 1km farther back 6,000 years ago and began re-advancing about 1,000 years ago, which is clear evidence of cooling since the Medieval Warm Period.
Even the biology of the continent documents this shift.
A millennium ago, the Ross Sea hosted around 200,000 elephant seals as far south as 78 degrees. Today, those colonies are gone. They disappeared as the region froze over: too cold and ice-choked for breeding or foraging.
The Hall paper concludes: "The last few centuries, including the present, represent the coldest, iciest conditions in the post-glacial period."
Modern Antarctica is not warming, it's freezing.
Moroccan journalist Ali Lmrabet, who lives in Barcelona, was arrested this afternoon upon arriving at Tangier airport. Although the prosecutor's office has initiated legal proceedings against him, the real issue is that he writes freely from #Spain. So let's stop claiming that the authorities in #Morocco are becoming more tolerant over time. @MAECgob@jmalbares@sanchezcastejon@MarocDiplomatie @Marocdiplo_E @Alilmrabet
@La_SER Espero que se vaya a su casa cuando pierda. Pero seguro que le tienen preparado y puesto con un sueldo inmerecido que tendremos que pagar todos.
In 2015, ISIS captured Palmyra and demanded its head of antiquities reveal where the treasures were hidden.
He was 81 years old. He refused.
Khaled al-Asaad had spent over 50 years excavating and protecting Palmyra, the caravan city that once rivalled Rome in the Syrian desert.
He learned Aramaic to read its inscriptions. He raised his children among its ruins and named his daughter Zenobia, after its rebel queen.
Before the city fell, he helped evacuate hundreds of artefacts to safety. ISIS interrogated him for weeks to find them. But he gave them nothing.
They executed him in the square and left his body among the columns he had spent his life defending.
Archaeology is not a soft profession. Sometimes the people who guard the past die for it.

The global mean surface temperature today is only about 1C warmer than it was in 1880.
This modest rise has been framed as a 'climate emergency,' yet in historical context it is trivial.
Global temperatures have fluctuated by more than 10C over natural glacial cycles long before industrialization. Even during the Holocene, recent periods such as the Medieval Warm Period were far warmer than today without triggering catastrophe.
The data show no runaway warming or planetary collapse. In fact, historical records reveal warmth is beneficial to humanity and to life in general.
This disconnect between reality and the apocalyptic rhetoric exposes the ruse. There is no "climate crisis."
@jpereztriana Es que los tontos ahora son muy visibles. Antes de las redes sociales solo te los encontrabas cuando ibas a un pueblo desconocido para ti y le preguntaba a alguien por una dirección y siempre dabas con el tonto del pueblo.
“The Catholics pick the very best chaplains - young, virile, active and patriotic. The troops look up to them. I’ve only met one or two Protestant chaplains worth their ration cards.”
- USMC Lt. General Chesty Puller
In the Pacific Theatre of WW2, a Protestant chaplain approached Col. Puller, complaining that many Marines were converting to Catholicism.
Later, while the Marines were out on patrol, Puller found that same chaplain at the battalion HQ. He told him,
“Your place was with the fighting men. You remember our little talk about Protestant boys joining the Catholics? They see those priests doing their duty and see you evading it. I can’t work up much sympathy for you.”
There were so many converts that mothers in the US wrote letters to the front, concerned that their sons would join the Catholic Church. Puller wrote back that if the Protestant chaplains had the guts to go where the Catholic chaplains did, where the bullets were flying, maybe their sons wouldn’t be converting.
Chesty Puller, a lifelong Episcopalian, had great respect for the Catholic chaplains of WW2 and even sent his own children to Catholic school after the war.
