They called him the Bulldozer because he flattened everything in his path, corruption, excuses, and, eventually those viruses of 2019 from China

In February 2021 the machine started coughing. Not a polite little one. No. This was a deep, wet, metallic hack, the sound of a Caterpillar engine drowning in its own oil.

His doctors whispered some forbidden words like Covid 19. The son of the famer just smiled and prayed.

Ten of his ministers dropped dead in six weeks, blue-lipped, clutching their chests like bad actors in Nigerian movies. Still the Bulldozer refused a mask. He explained that masks were for cowards and Belgians.

By the first week of March the engine was seizing. Finally In the dead of night they wheeled him to an airstrip, oxygen hissing like an angry cobra and brought him here Nairobi.

Not because Kenya has better hospitals (God forbid), but because Kenya is close enough to reach before those little things from china wins

He crossed the border on life support, incognito, alias “Mr. John Pombe,” At Wilson Airport the runway was cleared the way Moses cleared the Red Sea lights switched off, phones confiscated and pilots threatened with shorter careers.

In the presidential suite of Nairobi Hospital (North Wing, corner room), the Bulldozer lay tethered to machines that beeped in perfect 120-bpm tembo rhythm.

Kenyan doctors, polite to the end, kept saying “Your Excellency” while carefully and meticulously sliding ever larger tubes down the throat of the strong man .

For three consecutive days the machines were singing periodically. On the fourth night the song went flatline.

The doctors looked at one another, afraid and disturbed. The engine block had finally cracked beyond salvation.

“Should we Switch it off?” one asked terrified Doc

“No Switch it off in Tanzania,” came the reply from a huge man very high up wearing those mirrored sunglasses indoors.

So they loaded the still-warm legend back onto the air ambulance, tubes dangling like Christmas lights on a dead tree, and flew him home so he could die on native soil and preserve the official narrative.

Touchdown Dar es Salaam was Thursday, 11 March and time of death was almost immediately.

Time of announcement was six days later, after the vice-president had practised her sad face in the mirror and the speechwriters had changed “heart complications” to “chronic heart condition he bravely bore for ten years".

On 17 March, Samia Suluhu Hassan went on television looking like a woman who had just won the lottery and was contractually obliged to cry about it.

“Tanzanians,” she said, voice trembling with Nollywood -worthy sincerity, “today, at six p.m., we lost our brave leader to heart disease.”

The machines in Mzena Hospital, already cold and wiped clean, said nothing.

That is how we lost our African hero. The man who moved mountains with bulldozers .

He died on a Thursday.
They buried the truth on a Wednesday.
Typical Tanzanian efficiency.
