Tax waiver has kicked off in Kenya.
Starting today, 1st July 2026, the tax amnesty introduced by the Finance Act, 2026 has officially taken effect.
โข How does it work?
KRA shall delete your tax penalties, interest and non-compliance fines,
Provided you pay the principal (actual tax) due.
โข What period does it cover?
It covers tax liabilities that arose on or before 31st December 2025.
Under one condition.
- You must clear the principal tax before 1st Jan 2027.
Example.
Say your actual tax bill for 2020 was Ksh 100,000.
You did not pay it because of cash flow challenges.
Over the years, penalties and interests have accumulated to Ksh 30,000.
If you pay the Ksh 100,000 before 2027,
KRA shall take the rubber, and erase the 30,000.
โข One question many people are asking:
- Will KRA also waive the penalties for late filing of your 2025 tax return late?
The answer is: Yes.
โข So what should you do?
โข Check your iTax ledger immediately.
โข Identify the principal tax outstanding.
โข Pay the principal tax.
โข Leave the penalties, interest and fines untouched.
KRA shall erase them.
A word to someone handling a KRA audit this week.
- Never lie to KRA. But do not overshare either.
Why?
- If you lie to the auditor, you lose credibility.
Everything you say going forward becomes suspect.
- If you overshare, you expose yourself to more scrutiny.
Example:
A KRA auditor notices 900K sent to Kabura in December.
While casually reviewing your bank statement, he asks:
- What was this for?
You say: It was for team building in Mombasa.
He asks: Who is Kabura?
Now two people answer differently.
- One says: She is the company finance manager.
- Another says: She is the finance manager. Ndiye bibi ya tajiri.
The auditor's curiosity is provoked by the 2nd reply.
- Is this a genuine expense?
- Or a way to move money out of the company thro the wife tax free?
More queries are triggered.
The first answer was enough.
The second answer opened a new audit angle.
Lesson.
- Lying destroys your credibility
- Oversharing multiplies your problems
Proverbs 21:23:
Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.
KRA has clarified something many employed Kenyans ignore.
They are shocked.
In simple terms.
If you are employed and you have a side hustle, you must report ALL your income in your usual annual tax return.
Not salary alone.
For example
- You earn a monthly salary, PAYE deducted
- You freelance on weekends
- You run a small online business
- You farm in ushago
- you own houses and earn rental income
KRA wants you to add everything together. And pay taxes on these additional incomes.
Why?
- Because PAYE only taxes your salary.
It does not โcloseโ your tax affairs.
Taxes on the rest of the incomes are left hanging.
What people wrongly assume:
- โPAYE is finalโ
- โSide hustle money ni kidogo sanaโ
- โAfter all, how will KRA notice or catch me?โ
But in reality
- Some banks report you to KRA thro CRS
- Platforms like Airbnb, Upwork , et al, report you to KRA
- Tenants report you to KRA
- The salty ex you dumped because she was boring reports you to KRA
- Digital trails exist
Result
- Unreported income attracts penalties & interest
- Audits years later = painful tax bills
- Maximum chest pain.
In simple, KRA's position is:
- One person.
- One PIN.
- One tax return.
- Report everything.
- Pay tax on everything
That's the law.
Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya. Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions. Like few other leaders anywhere, he was willing to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values. Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya.

What SHIF will deduct from my payslip annually can get me 10 million shillings inpatient, 500,000 shillings outpatient and comprehensive dental and optical cover for me and each family member.
And for what? 2000 shillings annual family dental cover from the government.
