Bonner Springs storms back to defeat Kapaun 53-50 to capture the 5A State Championship. The game featured nine lead changes, and Bonner Springs led for just 5:50 of the contest. The Braves trailed by five entering the fourth quarter but closed strong, outscoring Kapaun 19-10 and shooting 78% in the final frame to secure the win.
Head coach Drew Gruver, in just his second season at Bonner Springs, has done a fantastic job leading the Braves to a 27-1 record. The title marks Bonner Springs’ first boys basketball state championship since 1984. Kelan Gruver led all scorers with 21 points, while Nathanael Ferrell added 12 in the championship victory. Bonner Springs punched their ticket to the 5A State Tournament with a win tonight over St. James Academy. The Braves won 67-47 and have only dropped 4 games on the year. This will be their 14th state appearance in school history, the last being 2019. #sportsinkansas
