Living Without Labels
Some think I’m Christian because I talk about love, compassion, and forgiveness.
The truth is, I talk about human values, the very ones Jesus embodied.
I’ve been asked if I am Buddhist because of my meditation practice, nope.
I’ve been asked if I’m a Hindu because I believe in non-duality. And some assume I’m pagan because I hug trees and revere nature.
But the truth is, I’m not interested in labels.
Labels divide and limit us. They box in the beauty and potential of who we are.
As soon as we name something, it automatically becomes limited.
At 60, I gave away all my possessions and embarked on a journey to discover the truth for myself.
Who would I be without the weight of cultural, societal, religious, or even familial identities?
It was the most terrifying and liberating thing I have ever done.
What I discovered is this: There is something greater than my human self that I am a part of.
Everything is interconnected; the Source is within me. It is me, as it is everything seen and unseen. The Universe is beneficent. I don’t need to name it. Why limit the unlimited?
Call it God, Source, Spirit, the Sacred Feminine, the Divine Masculine, the Universe, or Quantum Energy. It is ineffable.
You see, it doesn’t matter to me.
What matters is love and kindness.
What matters is my ability to recognize we are all in this together.
What matters is living with a noble heart and seeing beyond the outer appearance of things.
Do you want to know who I really am?
I am not a label.
I am not a category.
I am not an identity to be argued or defended.
I am conscious. I am alive. I am here.
And so are you.
I was born an underdog. 21 surgeries by the age of 12 for spina bifida. A kid wearing goodwill hand-me-downs. I knew nothing would come easy, but I never doubted my right to the American dream.
Now, I'm running for the U.S. Senate to make sure all Iowans have a shot at theirs.
Growth isn’t betrayal, it’s becoming.
Let go of what no longer fits.
Step into the you who doesn’t need to prove, pretend, or shrink to feel safe. Your Soul knows the way.

Sometimes I forget the holiness of ordinary things. The sound of my sweet, eager little dog Momo, running to greet me.
I used to think that God was in the extraordinary.
But now I’m remembering…God is everywhere.
And maybe that’s the point.
The sacred doesn’t always shout, but I'm pretty sure it barks. It doesn’t always shine the way I think. Sometimes, it just waits in the seemingly mundane and ordinary until I remember how to notice.
And when I do…my heart opens. The miracle happens, and I can see it differently.
You know, it’s all God. Always has been.
Today, I let go of the need for fireworks and mountaintops. I open my eyes to the divine hidden in plain sight. I slow down. I notice. And in the stillness of the ordinary, I am met by the extraordinary.
Oh, Momo....

Your aliveness isn’t extra. It’s essential.
You don’t have to wait for permission. You don’t have to earn the right to shine.
You only need to say yes to what already lives inside you.
Let the world feel your joy.
Let your radiance take up space. It’s how we remember what’s possible.
Your aliveness isn’t something extra. It’s not a luxury. It’s essential.
Whether you’re creating art, music, raising a child, or simply learning to live with more love.
How do you know when you’re aligned with your spiritual nature? You feel it.
It’s not intellectual, no, it’s visceral.
It’s the goosebumps. The awe of holding a newborn. The aliveness of falling in love for the first time. Remember that?
It’s the swell of joy that rises for no reason.
These moments are not caused by something outside of you. They’re your remembrance of who you are.
And once you feel that connection, once you claim it, you’ll never again doubt your worth, the Source of your true power, or your purpose for being here.
We often chase peace like it’s to be found somewhere else.
I sure did.
When I achieve this, or fix that.
When I heal my body.
When I get my degree or certification.
When I finish this course in meditation.
That’s a good one.
But here’s the thing, peace doesn’t live in perfection.
It lives in Presence.
Come back. You can have it now, right here, in this moment.
Your breath is enough. You are enough.
Love, ~ Joe

Gratitude is not a denial of what’s hard.
It’s a remembering of what’s still here.
The breath that stayed.
The heart that beats. The ever-expanding awareness.
The willingness to learn the lesson being offered.
It won’t erase the pain ~ but it can transform it. It will open your heart just enough to let the miracle in.
If you let it. ~
Love, Joe

You are allowed to fall apart.
You are allowed to be confused.
You are allowed not to have the answers.
You don’t have to hold it all together.
Not to be cared for.
Not to be loved.
Not to be safe.
You are already held ~ by something greater, gentler, and more beneficient than you’ve ever known.

There are days when you’ll lose your way. ~ I do.
Moments when you’ll forget the truth of who you are. But I’ve come to experience that Grace never forgets.
It gently calls us to return, again and again, where it patiently, lovingly waits.
Love doesn’t need us to be perfect; our soul never forgets. Love, Joe

Let these words land.
You don’t have to reach some future version of yourself to be worthy.
You don’t need to wait for the pain to pass or the past to be cleaned up.
You are already enough.
Already whole.
Already worthy.
Let that truth meet you right here — in this breath, in this moment, in this you.

We search for love.
Long for it.
Wonder where it’s gone.
But what if Love was never missing?
What if it’s been here, quiet, steady, patient, just waiting for us to slow down enough to feel it?
The next time you’re rushing, pause.
Be still. Place a hand on your heart.
Breathe.
You might just notice…
Love hasn’t left.
It’s been here all along.
The sacred isn’t something you have to chase.
It's already here. In the gentleness of your smile.
In the kindness of your presence
In the beauty of this now.
Love, Joe 🕊
