Ketraco and Africa50 are planning grand projects that we might need 200 years to use.
I was the Design, Construction and Commissioning Engineer for Zambia- Tanzania interconnector while working for ABB.
This was a 66kV line from Mbala(take off bay), Zambia, just south of Lake Tanganyika to Sumbawanga 15MVA 66kV/33kV/11kV in Tanzania.
The 66kV line was 572 km from Pensulo 330kV/66kV to Mbala existing.
Normally a 66kV line should go about 100kms.
This line was extended from Mbala ZM to Sumbawanga TZ another 120kms making it about 700 km which was a record.
That brought problems.
On light loading, because of Capacitance, the Voltage would rise to 84kV from 66kV leading to Over voltages which could damage Power Equipment.
With moderate loading, it used to drop from 66kV to 59kV.
This is what can happen if for instance you build a 220kV line 300kms to supply only 1 MVA in Mandera.
This is the same problem we are going to face with these Africa50 Projects by Ketraco where they intend to construct 220kV and 400kV lines with very little load like Western and North Rift.
So Load Voltage regulation was very poor.
I last heard they were planning to add Series Voltage Compansators SVC. These are Solid State using eg Thyristors to add Capacitive or Inductive Reactive Power. High Speed reaction.
Prof Lukoye Atwoli, Dean, AKU Medical College, East Africa has been recognised as the top-ranked researcher in medicine (2021-2023) based on the number of publications according to SciVal Scopus. Read more: https://t.co/zFmk4TwUuZ
Ketraco: Now 372km of a mix of 132kV, 220kV and 400kV should not cost more than US$ 200,000 (KShs 26m) per km. Take even 35m. Total should be Shs 13 Billion. Add the 2 Substations each and Shs 1 Billion. That is 2B.
Total should be KSHS 15B. So why is it Shs 99B??
Those Adani lines are not even required. With Kenya's measly demand of 2000MW and Nairobi taking 60% of the demand, we don't need 400kV. The Ethiopia-Tanzania 400kV interconnector already done is more than enough.
When we reach the level of S. Africa with 55,000MW demand in 200 years, then we can do those Adani lines ourselves.
It is very sad that people who have opportunities can have this kind of thinking. It is no wonder that Africans still are backward, dependants. Forget about Industrialisation, poverty reduction. There is no need of Africans doing University courses at University. What for? Lets just do https://t.co/ZiJGjuxPui, Law, Political Science etc. Then we will only be debating.
1. Where is the rapid Industrialisation? Can they show the figures. It was 700MW in 1986 and is now 2000MW after 40 years. Those proposed lines can be done on 'need basis' and Kenyans themselves to do it.
2. In fact other than just one like required in Kisii area, we have overcapacity in transmission everywhere else.
3. Technology Transfer to KETRACO Engineers and others?? Africans cannot be forever getting 'Technoloy Transfer'. A time should reach when you practice what was 'Technology Transfer' to you. 60 years after independence and we are still doing 'Technology Transfer'?
4. In fact an Engineer who has just started a career at KETRACO and gets this 'Technology Transfer', by the time Adani Group are handing over after 30 years, this Engineer will be retiring having never put the skills into practice. They will just become farmers and kiosk owners. Many of us have been in this illusion of Technology Transfer for years and it is starting all over again.
5. Adani is NOT an Original Equipment Manufacturer. He will buy the equipment the way we can buy. That capability is very much here.
6. Let us not count temporary casuals employed by Adani as providing employment.
7. I feel IEK and EBK and ICPAK, LSK should censure and deregister Professionals who came up with such a document
