Worried by the prevalent cases of gender-based violence against women and girls, the Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye has advocated for fair treatment of women and girls while reiterating the urgent need for appropriate measures and policies to be put in place to address this unfriendly practice which does not only pose as barrier to social cohesion but also depletes the dignity of women.
The Minister made this statement earlier today in Abuja during the annual High Level Gender Based Violence Summit of Traditional and Religious Leaders in Nigeria and West Africa under the auspices of the UN Women and Ford Foundation to push to the front burner, lingering issues bordering on gender based violence within the West African Sub-region.
According to her “we cannot easily appreciate the magnitude of challenges our women and girls are confronted with due to some harmful gender norms which are not only used to fuel and widen the gap of gender inequality but also depletes the dignity of women and the girl child”
She also reiterated some of the measures put in place by the Ministry under her watch to address gender based violence, “through sustained engagement and advocacy by the Ministry, Mobile Courts have been established in Osun and Anambra including the FCT and other states will soon commence the operation of Mobile Courts for quick dispensation of justice on matters relating to sexual and gender based violence against Nigerian women and girls in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs”.
“ on a daily basis, I receive cases of physical attacks and humiliation of women by their husbands and we strongly believe that we cannot address it alone. With the royal fathers and religious leaders, we are optimistic that gender based violence and other harmful norms will soon be stamped out from our society”
The Minister also stated that 15 states have benefited from sustainable empowerment items such as Rice milling machines, Cassava and Garri processing machines and other items to cushion the economic challenges faced by most families while other states will benefit in the next phase. She added that in fulfillment of its pledge, the Ministry has concluded plans to empower the 100 female orphans who were slated for the proposed mass wedding in Niger State. “ We are sinking boreholes, distribute bags of Rice, Wrappers, POS machines and other items to provide a new lease of life for the girls and other members of the community”
In his presentation, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alh Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar commended the Minister for her resilience and passionate strides towards scaling up the socio-economic status of Nigerian women through sustainable empowerment initiatives and added that gender based violence is one of the greatest ills against humanity and requires collectives efforts to be eradicated from our society.

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, has resolved with the Emir of Kotangora, HRH Alh Mohammed Barau Muazu and the Speaker Abdumalik Sarkindaji to seek ways of collaboration to give new lease of life to the girls, but the Court's injunction remains.
"I haven't withdrawn my case until we carry out due diligence and profiling on the girls. We will also engage the girls on enrollment in schools, skill acquisition training and empowerment of the girls. The Ministry's primary aim is to ensure that the Welfare and interests of the girls is guaranteed ".
NIGER STATE MASS WEDDING: WOMEN AFFAIRS MINISTRY ADVOCATES FOR EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT
The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs has disclosed robust plans to give a new lease of life to the 100 female orphans who were earlier slated to be married off in mass wedding scheduled for 24th May, 2024 at Mairiga Local Government Area under the sponsorship of the Speaker, Niger State House of Assembly,Rt Hon Abdulmalik Sarkindaji.
Speaking during a media brief in Abuja, the Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye stated that “the Ministry had earlier secured a Minna High Court injunction on the proposed wedding but with the intervention of the Etsu Nupe, HRH Alh Yahaya Abubakar visit of the Emir of Kotangora, HRH Alh Mohammed Muazu and the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, we are seeking alternate ways of resolving the issue” she said.
In the words of the Minister “our primary aim is to guarantee the welfare and interests of the girls which forms part of the Ministry’s mandate and that was why I directed the relevant department in the Ministry to activate the process for a court injunction which we got yesterday to restrain the organizers of the proposed wedding from proceeding with it till we carry out due diligence and profiling on the girls to ascertain their ages and other relevant details”
Continuing, Barr Uju stated that she was delighted to receive the Emir of Kotangora and Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly in her office to seek who urged her to consider alternate ways of resolution. During the visit, the Emir stated that he has suspended the proposed wedding and pledged his emirate’s willingness to partner with the Ministry in any possible way to provide a new lease of life for the girls.
In the same vein, the Speaker said that “I was acting in good faith because the traditional rulers within my community approached me and sought for my assistance towards the wedding ceremony and I obliged them with good intent but with the intervention of the Minister, I am here to seek ways of resolution and for us to partner towards giving the girls a new lease of life”
Speaking further, the Minister opined that part of the arrangement include a meeting with the girls for proper profiling to work towards sending them to school, provision of digital skill acquisition training, onboarding the girls on the Ministry’s E-market portal and provision of sustainable empowerment for the girls because according to her “ our joint efforts will be geared ensuring the welfare of the girls but the Court injunction still subsists till we resolve all grey areas” the Minister added.

As part of side line events in the office, today I recieved a team from the International Organization for Migration(IOM) led by its Chief Mission to Nigeria, Laurent Boeck.
The team was at the Ministry for the Quarterly Coordination Meeting on its partnership with the Ministry of Women Affairs for vulnerable migrants who are unable to make decision for themselves within Nigeria and across its borders.
In the course of the meeting, I was delighted to note the IOM's remarkable feat of developing and validating national policy documents for the administration of Best Interest Procedures, Best Interest Determination and the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on family tracing and reunification for all categories of vulnerable migrants within Nigeria and across its borders. These documents will be unveiled soon but the Ministry and the IOM has further scaled up collaborations towards a meaningful productive life for migrants through provision of sustainable empowerment initiatives for vulnerable returnees with human development such as education/skill acquisition and temporary shelters to forestall the returnees' compelling relapse to irregular migration with attendant human degradation.
The IOM further pledged to support the Ministry through facility upgrade and other forms of corporate partnership in our efforts to promote the interest and welfare of migrants in Nigeria and across its borders
Worried by emerging developments from Niger State, I engaged the Media today to express the concerns of the Ministry over the proposed plan by the Speaker of Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji to marry off about 100 female orphans who lost their parents to banditry attacks in Mariga Local Government Area.
For me, it's not a personal issue but we are concerned about the entire process complying with our Constitutional provision on minimum age of marriage and the Child Rights Act 2003 which set the age of marriage at 18 years old and since we dont know the ages of the girls who are lined up for the cluster marriages on 24 May, 2024, the Ministry has initiated legal process of Court injunctions to put the proposed ceremony on hold while we get proper clarifications. The office of the Inspector General of Police has also been engaged formally to carry out investigations and the whole essence is to avoid pushing the girls into marriages that are not conducive to guaranty their safety and future.
The Ministry expects the Speaker to identify ways of putting the girls through skills acquisition, sustainable empowerment and other measures to ensure that the socio-economic status of the girls is guaranteed.

PRESS RELEASE
WOMEN AFFAIRS MINISTRY MOVES AGAINST MASS MARRIAGE OF 100 ORPHAN GIRLS IN NIGER STATE
... _advocates for their education and empowerment_
The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs has said that the proposed plan by the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, to organise a mass marriage for the 100 female orphans in the State on May 24, should be investigated so as to ascertain their ages, consent as well as preparedness for the union.
The Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Barrister (Mrs) Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye made the disclosure Monday, during a Press Briefing held in her office in Abuja, in reaction to the recently announced plans by the Speaker, to marry off the orphans girls who lost their parents during the banditry attacks in Mariga Local Government Area of the State, as part of his constituency projects
While acknowledging the good gesture of the Speaker aimed at alleviating the
suffering of the impoverished by pledging to pay the dowries of the bridegroom and in the procurement of the materials for the mass marriage, Barrister Kennedy-Ohanenye observed the need for the Speaker to consider the future of the children by finding out whether they prefer marriage to education and empowerment
The Minister opined that rather than the step being taken by him to fulfil his constituency projects, the Speaker should rather look towards developing them through education, skills acquisition and other forms of empowerment as this will not only be of immense benefit to them but would also contribute to the overall development of the society.
*These girls like their contemporaries in the country and globe, have great potentials and talents and as such need to be given the opportunity to develop and reach their optimum in life*, she said
According to her, by prioritizing education and empowerment over early marriage, the cycle of poverty and inequality that plaques orphans will be broken from their lives, thus enabling them to marry husbands of their choices and further reducing cases of gender based violence and out-of-school children which are usually the resultant effect of such unions.
Barr Uju also stated that in line with its mandate under the Child's Rights Act, the Ministry has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and sought a court injunction to put a hold on the sponsored marriage until further investigation is carried out with a view to ensuring that the welfare of the orphans are adequately covered.
The Minister further restated the Ministry's commitment to the protection of the lives of the women, children and the vulnerable in society, in line with its mandate.

I was personally delighted to formally receive the winner of Miss Heritage International 2023/2024, Queen Tracy Solomon who was crowned in Bangkok late last year after participating with other ladies from 75 countries spanning across Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia.
This feat is remarkable as it's been 22 years since a Nigerian lady took the global stage as winner of a beauty pageant.
I was reliably informed that the essence of Miss Heritage global cultural event is to promote the preservation of our diverse cultural heritage and advocate for social issues and am glad to note that part of the mandates given to the our global ambassador is to focus on women and youths as well as key issues such as climate change, smuggling, out-of-school children, drug abuse, trafficking and educational support for women.
My Ministry will work closely with Queen Tracy to further upscale awareness and attract support for programs and projects that promotes the interest of women and children
I was personally delighted to recieve the Ghanaian First Lady, Her Excellency Rebecca Naa Okaikor Akufo-Addo on behalf of the Nigerian First Lady @SenRemiTinubu

I was a special guest at the High Level Socialization /Public Presentation of Nigeria's Long -Term Low-Emission Development Strategy in Abuja. The document serves as a long term strategy and a vehicle for transporting Nigeria to a Net-Zero Pathway by 2060.
Personally, I commend this and other initiatives by stakeholders and relevant partners in Nigeria to address the obvious challenges of climate such as hotter temperatures, air pollution and violent storms which are life-threatening dangers for children including difficulty breathing, malnutrition and higher risk of infectious diseases.
Our women are not left out of the challenges posed by climate change as our mothers are often responsible for food production and farming activities hence variations in extreme weather events due to climate change can negatively impact crop yields, decreasing income and food security for women and their families.
From all indications, all hands must be on deck to avert obvious consequences of climate change in our country
