"Faith of our Fathers! we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife;
And preach thee too as love knows how,
By kindly wordsand virtuous life
Faith of our fathers, holy Faith!
We will be true to thee till death!"
"O God,
strength of all who put their trust in you, mercifully accept our prayers &—because thru the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without you—grant the help of your grace, that in the keeping of your commandments we may please you both in will & deed..."
"Bountiful God,
who poured your Spirit upon your servant Barnabas & gave him grace to encourage others: Help us, by his example, to be generous in our judgments & unselfish in our service—through Christ our Lord, who is alive & reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit..."
"O God, from whom all good things come,
grant that we, who call on you in our need, may at your prompting discern what is right, & by your guidance do it—through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives & reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever."
"O God,
who in a wonderful Sacrament hast left unto us a memorial of thy Passion: Grant us so to venerate the mysteries of thy Body & Blood that we may ever know within ourselves the fruit of thy redemption—who livest & reignest with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit..."
"God our redeemer,
who called Boniface to preach among the German people & to build up your Church in holiness: Grant that we may preserve in our hearts that faith which he taught with his words & sealed with his blood, & profess it in lives dedicated to your Son Jesus Christ..."
"Almighty and eternal God,
you have revealed yourself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and live and reign in the perfect unity of love: Hold us firm in this faith, that we may know you in all your ways & evermore rejoice in your eternal glory, who are three Persons yet one God..."
@PetriOP The best book I have read on the topic is https://t.co/G9Mmns7YrK , written by a couple of Methodists. Not all of it would fit a Catholic context, but it's certainly worth reading and considering.
"O God,
who hast made the blood of Martyrs the seed of Christians: mercifully grant that the field which is thy Church, watered with the blood shed by Charles Lwanga & his companions, may be fertile & always yield thee an abundant harvest—through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord..."
O God,
who through the foolishness of the Cross didst wondrously teach blessed Justin Martyr the excellent
knowledge of Jesus Christ: Grant to us by his intercession, that, driving away the errors that beset us, we may attain unto steadfastness of faith..."
"O Lord, holy Father...;
with thy co-eternal Son and Holy Spirit, thou art one God, one Lord, in Trinity of Persons & in Unity of Substance; for that which we believe of thy glory, O Father, the same we believe of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit..." (from a Trinity Sunday prayer)
"O God,
who by the preaching of Augustine led the English peoples to the Gospel, mercifully grant that the fruits of his labors may remain ever abundant in thy Church and that the hearts of them that have gone astray may return...through Jesus Christ thy son our Lord..."
"Almighty and everlasting God,
who hast willed thy Paschal Sacraments to be comprehended in the mystery of 50 days ; grant, we beseech thee, that the people scattered abroad by the confusion of tongues may by thy heavenly gift be gathered again into one confession of thy Name..."
"...On the faithful, who adore
And confess you, evermore
In your sevenfold gift descend;
Give them virtue's sure reward;
Give them your salvation, Lord;
Give them joys that never end.
Amen. Alleluia."
– from the Pentecost Sequence ("Veni, Sancte Spiritus")
"Graciously grant to your Church, O God, that, gathered by the Holy Spirit, she may be devoted to you with all her heart and united in purity of intent — through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives & reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever."
"Grant, we pray, Almighty God,
that as we believe your only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into heaven, so we may also in heart and mind there ascend, and with him continually dwell; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God..."—Ascension Day
@ArsenioOrteza That caught my attention too—in the RSV. Answer: Since the Greek "pneuma" (spirit) is a neuter noun, the translators rendered the 2nd reference to the Holy Spirit in Acts 8:15-16 as "it." However, those translations use "he" when the antecedent is masculine, such as "Paraklētos."
"Merciful God,
who, when your Church on earth was torn apart raised up men and women who witnessed to their faith with courage and constancy: Give to your Church that peace which is your will, and grant that those who have been divided on earth may be reconciled in heaven..."
