Almost every Ugandan charges their phone at night. Nobody decided this. It became a creed, something wired into you. You plug in before you sleep because you do not know what tomorrow brings.

We have done it so long it stopped feeling like a choice. Charge the lamp the moment power comes back. Top up the power bank at eighty percent. Never let the laptop fall below half.

A whole country has quietly organised itself around a grid it cannot trust.

I have been reading Femi Otedola's Making It Big. What stays with me is how ordinary the beginning was. He was selling diesel in drums, door to door.

Nigeria could not keep its lights on, so every factory and bank and shop ran a generator, and every generator needed fuel. He sold the fuel. At one point his company supplied most of the diesel in the country, to Dangote, to Coca-Cola, to Cadbury. First billion dollars at forty one.

Ours is a stranger problem. We are not short of power. We built Karuma, six hundred megawatts, and the country now generates more electricity than it can actually deliver. Karuma itself has been running at about a third of what it can produce, partly because of weeds in the water.

The power exists. It just does not reach us. I am not an electrical engineer so I cannot explain why, maybe there is a genuine reason. Who knows.

So look at what we buy instead. The rechargeable lamp. The power bank. The solar panel and the battery. The stabiliser you plug the fridge into so it survives. The TV that burnt when the power came back too hard. The stock a shop loses when the fridge sits off all afternoon.

We call that normal, and we budget for it.

Otedola found his fortune inside a problem everybody had already accepted. This is ours.

Whoever gives this country power it can actually depend on will be our next US dollar billionaire.
