Earlier today, we kickstarted on our @MLCSeattleOrcas mission of “Creating new fans of Cricket and Seattle Orcas” with an event at the @Reubensbrews (The Taproom, Ballard).
This was the first community engagement activity in a series of many more to come as part of making Cricket accessible for new fans. We call it “Cricket in a Box”.
My partner on this journey and Captain of the initiative “Cricket in a Box” is @brleam - an avid sports fan, a Baseball coach and someone who fell in love with cricket during the lockdown times couple of years back, when he saw a few of his neighbors playing street cricket to keep themselves in the right state of mind and spirit. Since then Brian’s made it his passion to grow the sport within the community and find more adopters.
Today was completely planned and choreographed by Brian.
We set up a bowling range for people to try “rolling their arms over” to bowl a cricket ball, with prizes to be won for bowling fast. We got a whole lot baseball enthusiasts who sportingly lined up to evolve form the baseball pitching to cricket bowling. While there’s still some work to be done with a few of them to get their arms fully straightened, there was no shortage of excitement and intent. Some of them had serious gas in terms of pace and all of them were super competitive to get their hands on the Seattle Orcas hat.
A super fun afternoon all in all and mission well and truly underway!
For all of you in the Seattle area, who don’t yet follow Cricket but would be interested to try out an afternoon of Cricket over a few beers - give us a shout. We would love to get the “Cricket in a box” over to your neighborhood.
(Speeds in the leaderboard below recorded in mph and yes the one 88 mph was a baseball pitch)
