Just to give some more information on this.

Base damage is set by caliber, but archetype based bone modifiers push weapons further into their intended role, that's why a sniper and an LMG both chambered in 7.62x54mmR don't deal the same damage. This means that all calibers within the same archetype will deal the same damage.

As Joe mentioned, velocity plays a role too, as the bullet loses speed, it crosses a threshold where damage starts to fall off, so the higher the muzzle velocity the longer it takes for that bullet to loose damage.
