Just after noon yesterday (Friday, January 24, 2025), the Fort Worth Fire Department Alarm Office received a request for assistance with a high angle rescue from our neighbors down south with the @CityofBurleson Fire Department.
A contractor crew had somehow come in contact with electrical lines in the 700 block of North Burleson Boulevard inside of a substation— 150 feet high. We were told that the contractors had actually been working on the tower since about 9:00am that morning before the incident happened.
We quickly dispatched our technical rescue team (TRT) to assist with the effort. They brought with them Battalions 1 and 2, Engine 1 and 2, Medic 1, Support 1, Squad 2, Tower 1 and Ops 2.
When our crews arrived on scene, they met with Burleson FD and saw three contractors who were at the top of the tower. Two of the them were uninjured and ultimately able to get down by themselves.
Unfortunately, one was critically injured and needed to be rescued. It was a worse-case scenario: He was injured and stranded 15 stories in the air— straight up the pole.
The power was turned off to nearby residents so we could ensure there was no further risk to the patient or our first responders while executing this type of response.
After a collaborative plan was created, a rescue team ascended up the pole. The team was compromised of one firefighter from Burleson FD and one from Fort Worth to build the systems that would be needed to safely lower the injured contractor back down.
A lot of heavy equipment has to be taken all the way up with these rescuers. That way they can build everything they will need to safely bring themselves, the patient and the equipment back down when ready.
These types of responses are physically demanding on the body and use different muscle groups than what most people are used to using. All of these factors were met with chilly temperatures and winds that kept the pole swaying back and forth 150 feet in the air… while meticulously trying to do what needed to be done.
Our teams are highly skilled in technical rescues just like this one. Calls like this don’t happen that often so these teams dedicate much of their time to training. This ensures that when we do get these calls, they have the best shot of having a positive outcome.
The mindset of these responses are completely different from that of fighting fires. With one— we rush in and put out the fire as fast as we can, run in and search for people inside as fast as we can and do what’s needed to protect peoples property as fast as we can. With the other— we’re slow, calculated, methodical, mapped out and precise.
They are called “technical rescue” for a reason. Rope systems, anchor systems and pulley systems have to be built on site and then put in place right there during the response. With rescue groups high up top, crews working on top of the truck and ground teams below that help with the hoisting— they seamlessly work together hand in hand. YET, they are physically spread out over the entire scene. This requires clear, loud and concise radio communications between everyone involved so that everyone is moving at the exact same time. Otherwise, it won’t work. It’s an extremely complex effort that takes A LOT of time all the while knowing time is of the essence to rescue the injured victim.
Several hours after arriving, the teams were successful in bringing down the patient. He was given emergency life saving care and loaded into the back of an ambulance before being transported to a local burn facility.
Well deserved hugs and high fives were given out by the firefighters that were happy that all of our training paid off and brought the best possible outcome for this patient and his loved ones. And… everyone went home safely.
Stay safe, #FortWorth (and you too Burleson).
🚨🚨BREAKING: According to a new report from the Deputy Director of ICE, Joe Biden and Border Czar Kamala Harris allowed a SHOCKING number of criminals into America, including:
- 13,099 Murderers
- 15,811 Rapists
- 425,431 Convicted Criminals
Treason. Disqualifying. Evil.
The governor of California just made this parody video illegal in violation of the Constitution of the United States.
Would be a shame if it went viral.
Secret Service broke into a Massachusetts hair salon during a Kamala event. They covered the cameras with duct tape and broke inside to use the bathroom, let other attendees use the bathroom, and took candies off the desk.
They reportedly left the store unlocked and left the tape on for the rest of the day.
@RandyWatkins@tariqmss@N5REL@corbydavidson King snakes do eat other venomous snakes. This is not a king snake though. It is a rat snake, still good to have around. Non-venomous.
