It’s really mind-blowing seeing the @nytimes—one of the chief purveyors of false/misleading “doomsday headlines” about crime in NY & around country—now reporting on the electoral impact of their own harmful journalism practices. And yet mentioning only other papers & “media.”
This is astonishing, yet not surprising. If it feels like you're far less safe in NYC than ever before, it's not bc shootings are up. It's because the media (fueled by lies & fearmongering by NYC Mayor Eric Adams) is up. Look at this chart. Red line is shootings. Grey is media.
Thankful to have had the chance to put my thoughts about wilderness therapy in Mental Hellth, a publication which has often challenged my thinking around mental health treatment and was a big inspiration in writing this.
We police the homeless instead of housing people. We police the mentally ill instead of providing mental healthcare. We put police in schools instead of funding teachers and social workers. Aren't you tired of our money going to violence, instead of the care we need?
Trevor Noah: I love the New York Times, you guys are the best. You're some of the most accurate reporting in news. You never fail to write down *exactly* whatever the police have told you to say. Really powerful.

Not all drug use constitutes a substance use disorder. Many of the negative consequences of drug use are the direct result of criminalization and stigma, not anything inherent about the drugs themselves.
Incarceration DOES NOT make us any safer.
Incarceration DOES NOT prevent crime.
Incarceration DOES tear up communities and families.
Incarceration DOES take one’s humanity.
We need to STOP locking ppl up and really focus on the person and their TRAUMA

Police only solve 2% of major crime and yet so many Americans are terrified about criminals running wild if we have less cops. It’s ironic that the fear of crime is keeping us from actually addressing the root causes of crime.
There's a phenomenon I actually see extremely commonly when literature is used to teach history to middle school and high school students. Let's call it "pajamafication."
I will say this until I cannot physically say it anymore: The safest communities are the ones that have the most social resources - education, housing, and healthcare. Not the ones that are over-policed.
