I'd say we are not there yet in terms of capability, tech, and logistics, but we are getting closer and closer to a world of abundance being a real possibility

I really think a way to define our current epoch is the beginning phases of a transition from a world of scarcity to a world of abundance. Assuming of course that we don't destroy ourselves along the way with nukes, climate change, or AI...
productive power of capitalism over the last 200+ years, we are getting within reach of being able to truly support everyone. The issue is ultimately our frame of mind, rather than not having the tech or capability of supporting everyone on earth...

UBI would lead ppl to renounce work for a life of idle fun… (omg how awful!) and depress the willingness to produce and pay taxes of those who resent having to support them.
@HansonJarrod Context is the answer to your Q. IMO ppl are more disposed to idleness than work when the work available is incongruent w/ their passions and ambitions, which seems to be the case for many ppl
#UEDU5464Fall2020 no, we should not implement a UBI. UBI is just another scheme that takes $ targeted for poor ppl and redistributes it up the income scale. You're redistributing income upward away from those in poverty. Targeted poverty measures are the way to go.
@Bluedude588 ideally, I'd say UBI-like cash payments to poor ppl should taper off as their income increases, but in such a way that they're always better off with a better job. the situation many ppl were in during the height of lockdown where they were receiving more money not working...
@HansonJarrod It would, but then we aren't talking about a UBI anymore. We would be abandoning the Universal aspect of it, and our conversation would just be about income redistribution but with extra steps
