My transition out of academia is an opportune time to take stock of what I've learned from 17 years of research on disasters & climate impacts. Top of mind: in our decentralized land-use system, its going to take more than good information to make better development decisions. 🧵
Hey, friends, we just gave our company to planet Earth. OK, it’s more nuanced than that, but we’re closed today to celebrate this new plan to save our one and only home. We’ll be back online tomorrow.

@DentonCoESO To @DentonCoESO - You guys have been in my thoughts all day. My condolences to you and the entire Denton County team, and to Roland’s family and friends.
Today, @TDEM delivered more than 40 pallets, each containing 54 cases of water, to #TAMUC. This will help A&M-Commerce serve as a local water distribution hub, as this water will go toward the university, city and all of Hunt County through a series of local partnerships.
Another reminder...Be sure to watch out for slippery roads & sidewalks as slush and melted ice/snow will re-freeze each night.
Please do not attempt to walk, stand, or skate on any pond, lake or pool. #dfwwx#ctxwx#txwx
We have a statewide effort to collect damage assessment data from this #WinterStorm. Our goal is to identify the scale of the disaster and help officials assess the total statewide damages.
Please report damages here: https://t.co/Lwutq6WcBA
Heads Up! Dangers will continue even as we thaw out! Slush and melting ice/snow will refreeze each night. Snow and ice will also start falling from roofs, towers, trees, etc as temps start warming up. Remember not to stand, walk, or skate on any pools, ponds, or lakes! #txwx
It’s downright dangerous to drive in these conditions, please don’t. @GovAbbott has urged Texans to stay off the roads if they can and immediately call 800-525-5555 for roadside assistance if they become stranded on the road.
ERCOT calls for rotating outages as extreme winter weather forces generating units offline. “Every grid operator and every electric company is fighting to restore power right now,” said ERCOT President and CEO Bill Magness. https://t.co/rKoWcBZSew
In my 45 years of covering Texas weather, I don't remember ever seeing all 254 counties in the state under a Winter Storm Warning. And in the Guadalupe Mountains there is actually a Blizzard Warning.

As the weather continues to deteriorate, roads are becoming more dangerous by the hour. Please stay home unless there it is a true necessity and remember to keep warm, conserve power, and stay safe! #WinterStorm#TexasFreeze
These pictures from Denton County tell the story of our roadways. @TxDOT crews are removing accumulation as quickly and safely as possible, but we anticipate that driving conditions will continue to deteriorate as the next round of storms moves in our area. Stay home if possible.
The map at https://t.co/JVjjBpJwJA as of 11 am CST is astonishing! We aren't even close to being halfway thru this event. The intensity/scale of this event have @TxDOT's resources stretched to the max. Conditions on many roads may not get better until the weather thaws them out.
At the direction of @GovAbbott, State Mobile Vaccination Teams are visiting underserved communities throughout our state. Here's an inside look at the work that takes place to ensure #COVID19 vaccines are accessible to all Texans no matter where they live.
👐We teamed up with state partners @TDEM & @TexasDSHS to assist the locally managed #COVID19 mass vaccination sites💉 in #Denton & #Tarrant.
🔹The community is getting vaccinated thanks to the service of many partners like @WeAreDCPH, @TCPHtweets & @TXMotorSpeeway.
