"Well every player we bring in we want to improve the group. I think you can get caught up in all that, we just want to sign good players. That's the top and bottom of it. We want to sign players that will improve us, position-specific, and from a character POV fit in to the group. I think it's important from a chemistry POV and a numbers POV we don't bring too many in that affects that. Quality over quantity and that's what the new owners are looking at."

"We identified John from a long way back, from his time as a young player and how he did when he went out on loan and how he recovered from his injury, what he did at Brentford. I've got to say his contribution to that period was right up there, he was a huge player for us when we went up, player of the year do he was at the front of that. In the year in the PL he was absolutely outstanding and he's carved out an incredible career for himself. Captain of his country, I should imagine over 50 caps for the Republic, played in the Premier League. Still lives just round the corner, his love of the football club is huge and I'm sure he'll get an absolutely outstanding welcome from our supporters because they recognise the contributions of the people who really stick their lot in and John on every front off and on the pitch gave everything for the football club."
