Press Release: New Hanover County Declares State of Emergency to Aid Recovery from Severe Flooding
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC - New Hanover County Board of Commissioners Chair Bill Rivenbark has declared a state of emergency effective Wednesday, September 18, 2024, due to significant flooding caused by Potential Tropical Cyclone 8, which impacted the area on Monday, September 16, 2024.
The declaration is an administrative measure that enables the county to access state resources and activate emergency operations plans in the absence of a federal disaster declaration. It also authorizes necessary emergency measures to ensure public safety.
"Declaring a local state of emergency allows us to tap into state resources, which are critical even without federal aid," said Chair Rivenbark. "We're focused on the areas hit hardest by intense, highly localized storm activity, particularly those in Carolina Beach and Kure Beach."
Governor Roy Cooper has also declared a state of emergency for New Hanover County and other affected counties, providing additional support. That declaration allows the state to conduct a formal damage assessment, which can lead to public and individual assistance from state disaster recovery funds.
All county offices, libraries, parks, and other facilities remain open. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and exercise caution, especially in areas affected by flooding.
Residents are encouraged to sign up for the New Hanover County Emergency Alert System by texting READYNHC to 24639 for English users, or LISTONHC to 24639 for Spanish users. More information on how to prepare and stay connected in an emergency situation is available at https://t.co/ZkFydm8b6u.
