It’s time to address predatory towing in Des Moines.
“The process has stunk . . . This is an important contract. Towing practices in this city are a real concern. This should have been discussed by the council before the RFP. But the whole process has been shrouded in secrecy.”
You can’t make this up - as the Des Moines metro was in the midst of its first ever lawn watering ban because of high nitrates, the Trump admin said the waters weren’t impaired. You can’t solve a problem if you refuse to acknowledge it. https://t.co/v9GIhwiKjB via @DMRegister
Water quality is a major issue facing our community. This is a great opportunity to learn about the Central Iowa Source Water Research Assessment. Thanks to the @HarkinAtDrake for making this important work more accessible.
Join us for the FIRST official presentation on the findings from the Central Iowa Source Water Resource Assessment (CISWRA) report on August 4th. This groundbreaking study provides the most comprehensive analysis of water quality in the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers to date.
"We need significant action. And an entirely voluntary solution to a problem this big is not going to cut it”
Iowa’s largest urban area faces a water crisis. How experts say we can solve it. https://t.co/wMN5xlXD3p via @DMRegister
Just found my awesome city council representative at my door, sharing ideas with constituents.
He’s on our ballots this November. And you ought to vote for him if you’re in his district.
Housing is critical to creating a community that works for everyone. Our housing plan should help our residents find housing that meets their needs at a price they can afford. We can’t do that if most of our efforts on housing are designed to raise existing property values.
New post by Josh Mandelbaum: A draft plan recently submitted to the Des Moines City Council falls short of a comprehensive housing strategy and instead focuses almost exclusively on how to increase existing property values.

The City Manager should reinstate the sustainability office to continue important climate work and pursue available outside funding. Cutting Des Moines' sustainability office is irresponsible | Opinion https://t.co/uveWkexcyF
Now is the time for local governments to step up and lead on climate action. The City Manger’s decision made behind closed doors is wrong. I’ll work with my colleagues on the Council to reverse it. https://t.co/U33ZmvYXu6
To quote ELPC's @Josh_Mandelbaum: “Outdated verification rules allowed MidAmerican to mislead the public, claiming 100% renewable energy while operating a large, polluting coal fleet.
@iuc_now shows leadership by refusing to approve MidAmerican’s claims.” https://t.co/lFbr6NLvnE
"Why does MidAmerican Energy want to criminalize homelessness? You would think that a utility company would be utilitarian in its work, seeking the greatest good for the greatest number of people, but clearly, this isn't the case for MidAmerican." #CleanUpMidAm https://t.co/L0bMRuNXWv
Nitrate pollution from upstream ag runoff is straining water works ability to meet Safe Drinking Water standards. And those standards are likely not sufficiently protective given the cancer linkage with lower levels of nitrate.
Central Iowa Water Works & Des Moines Water Works are advising that in order to continue to meet the drinking water standard for nitrate, central Iowa water users in the coming days may need to reduce or hold off on lawn watering altogether.
Time to retire the Neal plants in Sioux City - “We know that these plants are massive carbon polluters. They’re impacting the climate, but on a local level, they are having an immediate and significant impact on the health of the communities surrounding these plants”
A new IEC report examines coal plant pollution and lung disease in Woodbury Co. "The data in this report raise troubling questions and should be concerning to all Iowans and to MidAmerican Energy," says Cody Smith with IEC. Read more at https://t.co/JmiOWKRH0E #worldasthmaday
We're outside the #BerkshireHathaway Shareholder Meeting rallying for a coal-free future! MidAmerican and their parent company know the harm coal is causing our communities, and they know that clean energy works. It’s time for action! #CleanUpMidAm https://t.co/aJsSgu1ro4
Last week, Iowans of faith and conscience (led by @iowaipl) marched to MidAmerican’s headquarters to demand a just transition away from coal! Check out this recap from the rally, then RSVP to join us this Saturday in Omaha: https://t.co/i6kujNto7g #CleanUpMidAm
Thank you to everyone that came out to today's #EarthDay Action, and shout out to @iowaipl for all of their work making this event a success! Iowans sent a clear message to MidAmerican Energy — it's time to transition away from coal! #CleanUpMidAm
12 partner groups joined IEC in a petition to the EPA to take emergency action on nitrate in drinking water. "We can no longer stand by as state officials cover their eyes and plug their noses to the massive amounts of manure contaminating our waterways," says IEC's Alicia Vasto.
Our community is stronger because folks like @RobJohnsonIA are working day in and day out to make it a better place. We need him in the Iowa legislature working for us.
Humbled and grateful to receive the endorsement of a true champion for the people of Des Moines, @Josh_Mandelbaum. Josh's dedication to our community is inspiring, and I'm honored to have his support as we work together to serve #IAHD34.
