@NYCMayor Mamdani’s city owned grocery initiative has a deep history in the U.S. and shows a smart mix of public assets, regulatory streamlining and market expertise — my latest with @JoshuaHumphries https://t.co/03PQA9dlLh
Today’s (unanimous) vote by @atlcouncil is largest-ever allocation ($11.6 million) for affordable housing out of City’s general fund budget.
Comes on heels of last year’s second-largest allocation ($8m).
Unsurprising they’re also @andreforatlanta’s first two budgets as mayor.
As Zoning Chair for the city, I’m getting questions regarding appropriate growth patterns in our diverse neighborhoods so you can imagine my excitement when I got to join @andreforatlanta on a field trip to South Park Cottages in College Park!
Come join us at 2 Peachtree! We’ll be talking social housing models, how we’re thinking about leveraging publicly owned land, and what building a new approach to affordable housing in Atlanta could look like
Social housing could be coming to Atlanta! Come out on September 5 to learn about the goals and what success could look like. @JoshuaHumphries@AOMard https://t.co/FeFddBjKlI
This sounds like a bold idea: Joshua Humphries, senior housing policy advisor to Mayor Dickens, says that a fire station at 170 10th Street in Midtown might be rebuilt with a mixed-income residential tower on top that includes affordable units.

I'm at the 41st floor of downtown's 2 Peachtree tower for the inaugural meeting of the Atlanta Urban Development Corporation.
The city wants to retrofit this building with hundreds of apartments, many of them affordable. Imagine affordable housing with this kinda view!
In addition building new affordable housing, @andreforatlanta’s administration is also building a team to help residents access the housing and housing resources they need.
Atlanta’s Housing Help Center is on pace to launch by October!
@heflinhollis@andreforatlanta@CourtneyEnglish@HousingAtlanta Will definitely include a variety housing types and project sizes. The public land portfolio includes residential infill lots, large undeveloped tracts, and urban fire stations that should be redeveloped to include housing above them. Our goal is to build housing on all of them.
Mayor @andreforatlanta’s Housing Strike Force is on the move!
The Atlanta Urban Development Corporation will be laser focused on building social housing, an internationally proven model of building long term affordable housing in mixed income communities on publicly owned land.
@heflinhollis@andreforatlanta@CourtneyEnglish@HousingAtlanta Also, both Bowen Homes and Civic Center deals will have ~40% of the units affordable, leveraging a combination of HUD subsidy (housing vouchers and Choice grant), Atlanta Housing funds, and Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.
@heflinhollis@andreforatlanta@CourtneyEnglish@HousingAtlanta Projects will use local subsidy ($38m allocated in new housing bond for this) rather than traditional (and scarce) federal and state Low-Income Housing Tax Credits that most affordable housing projects use. This allows us to build affordable units that wouldn’t happen otherwise.
Publicly owned land is one of our most underutilized resources.
In Atlanta, we’re repositioning these assets to be more dynamic so that we can build the affordable housing we need:
- housing + fire station underneath
- converting office to residential https://t.co/4U2zY2zUtJ
In Atlanta we’re pulling out all the stops to address our affordable housing needs.
The new Atlanta Urban Development Corporation will build on the internationally successful social housing model to bring more affordable housing to our residents.
@ChrisTest82@thomaswheatley@axios We’ve worked closely with the neighborhood on the plan over the last year. Legislation to formally adopt the neighborhood plan was recently introduced by @JasonHWinston and it will go before the NPU and City Council for approval in the few weeks.
Had a great time talking with @thomaswheatley and @axios about our public land development efforts in Atlanta. We have 30+ public land sites we’re working to redevelop with the critical affordable housing Atlanta residents need.
.@JoshuaHumphries talks with @thomaswheatley about developing public land for housing in Atlanta:
"We started looking at this need for affordable housing, the existing vacant land and started asking how can we best use that land to help us address our affordable housing need?"
