@JohnFBruno @nature That it got published in @nature is the most surprising part of all of this. If I purported to disprove a study on lobster larvae by using different methods with adult crabs, the "reject without review" would come in hours...

But its more citation-worthy (thanks @Nature) to "disprove" a somewhat similar study that is heavily cited than it is to try to publish something that marginally advances the field (some fish aren't affected by low levels of OA).

The core argument of @Timothy_D_Clark et al's criticism of OA science is that field experimental results in marine ecology should be repeatable across locations, species, life stage, designs, years, season, conditions, etc.

No serious experimental field ecologist thinks this.

But Ecology 101 doesn't get you published in @nature! My biggest question is why would Clark et al. NOT use the same species and life stage in a "replication"? They didn't try to? Couldn't keep anemonefish larvae alive? Got similar results to the original study? All red flags...

And of course the same is true of species, life stages, etc - their responses to enviro conditions VARY. We know that.
Countless studies document species-specific sensitivities to global change. Its not surprising. And its not scandalous. Its Ecology 101.
