Obituary: Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) - From National Hope to Tribal Briefcase
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), once a towering symbol of Kenya’s aspirations for reform and unity, has expired, withered into a hollow husk by Raila Odinga’s unyielding ambition and serial handshakes.
Born on October 11, 2005, in the heat of the constitutional referendum, ODM was 20 years old at its demise, reduced from a national movement to a tribal relic, and finally to a mere briefcase outfit, stripped of principle and purpose.
ODM burst onto the scene as a vibrant force for change, rallying a diverse coalition to champion devolution and equity. Under Raila Odinga’s leadership, it nearly won the presidency in 2007, exposing electoral flaws and helping birth the 2010 Constitution.
Its early years saw it unite supporters from Nyanza to the Rift Valley with promises of anti-corruption reforms and a break from elite dominance. By 2013 and 2017, ODM’s coalitions, like Azimio la Umoja in 2022, kept it a national contender, its orange banners synonymous with the fight for the marginalized.
But its decline began in 2008, when Raila’s first handshake with Mwai Kibaki traded revolutionary zeal for a power-sharing deal, dulling ODM’s fire. The 2018 handshake with Uhuru Kenyatta and the 2024 pact with William Ruto, struck amid Gen Z protests, entrenched a pattern of pragmatic betrayal. Each deal shrank ODM’s national character, narrowing its base to a tribal stronghold rooted in Luo loyalty.
By 2025, the party had become a “briefcase outfit” - a hollow vessel for Raila’s personal ambitions, with whispers of an African Union chairmanship as his exit from a fifth failed presidential bid in 2027.
This slide from national movement to tribal fiefdom, and finally to a one-man show, saw ODM lose talent and trust.
The postponed 20th anniversary celebration in Mombasa, cloaked as a nod to “inclusivity,” masked internal chaos.
Analysts long predicted ODM’s fade into irrelevance as Kenya’s youth-driven politics rejected tribal barons, leaving the party a relic outpaced by a new era.
ODM is survived by faint echoes of constitutional reforms, a disillusioned cadre of activists, and rivals like UDA, now feeding on its remains.
It is predeceased by the dreams of a united Kenya and the faith of millions who once saw orange as the color of change.
No ceremonies will mark its passing. Good riddance to bad rubbish - may Kenya’s future be free from the shackles of such diminished visions.
@itskipronoh We have mihadarati cartel in Kasongo @WilliamsRuto government. Am I the one who’s thinking any investigations should zoom in into the ICT and Mining mischiefs @honkabogo and @HassanAliJoho ?

@citizentvkenya Isn’t SHA is a platform for funds embezzlement?
For 104 billion, taxpayers yet don’t see value for money instead SHA was formed together with hundreds of makeshift clinics, ghost hospitals and fake dispensaries to siphon the SHA funds @WilliamsRuto@HonAdenDuale@DrMercyHealth
@K24Tv The bad governance has been in charge of youth disappearance, abduction, police brutality, abuse of power, excessive corruption, misuse of public resources, health care theft/fake clinics, land theft, etc.
Surely, it is better to have no government?
