All animals engage in play, but humans do it more than any other species, and there isn't a clear agreement on why that is. Play consumes resources—time and energy—that could be directed toward more significant activities. This suggests that play must hold importance, yet it remains poorly understood and is often dismissed as just a trivial pursuit for young children. Today’s educational approach tends to favor reducing playtime, encouraging children to transition quickly to adult-like responsibilities in order to achieve better outcomes in adulthood.

Ask a soccer (or Cricket, baseball, basketball, tennis, etc) coach, 'Can you teach soccer better than play?' They will hem and haw, but you don't need an answer from them, their action speaks louder than words. Because if they believed it they would already be using it.
