If AI starts automating cognitive service work where close to 75% of Canadians are employed, that’s not a tech bubble issue anymore. It’s a labour market issue
The uncomfortable question I am asking is that if AI becomes “smarter than most humans at most tasks” within 2–3 years, what does a middle-class career even look like?
Every time someone asks me what's going on with AI, I give them the safe answer. Because the real one sounds insane.
I'm done holding back.
I wrote what I wish I could sit down and tell everyone I care about.
Send it to someone who needs to read it.

Canada’s economy is dominated by services, with roughly 3 out of every 4 workers employed in the service sector. If AI threatens cognitive service work, that’s not niche disruption, it’s macroeconomic.
“It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, November 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone.”
- A. Bartlett Giamatti (with a small change from October to November)
