The novel helped me to understand social justice efforts with an appreciation for historical context. The importance of understanding history, generations and norms they instill, and how, even with good intentions, the impacts may not extend as far as one would like.
During #BlackHistoryMonth, as I reflect on this novel and the violent and oppressive milieu depicted, I look to Wright's own reflections of life in the 1930s and 1940s.
In writing Native Son, Wright wanted to "better indicate more precisely the nature of the environment that produced these men [i.e Bigger Thomas, the novel's main character], or the reader will be left with the impression that they were essentially and organically bad."
