Bangkok Gunman Dies by Suicide as Police Find Weapons and Explosives

The armed man who set fire to his home in Bangkok’s Bang Phlat district died by suicide as a SWAT team moved into the property, police said.

The man, identified as Sarawut Kesorn-in, reportedly shot himself twice with a 9mm handgun. Officers found him seated on a chair on the second floor, where the fire was spreading.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control after more than an hour. Police found military-grade firearms, ammunition and numerous suspected explosives inside the house, prompting officers to withdraw and call in an explosives-disposal team.

Authorities established a 200-metre exclusion zone and evacuated nearby residents. The deceased was reportedly the son of a retired major general, while the motive for the incident remains under investigation.

A man carrying a knife reportedly attacked people and damaged shop property around Sukhumvit 21, Soi Asok Montri, on 24 September.

Four people were reportedly injured. Police moved in to control the situation, while Poh Teck Tung Foundation rescuers assisted those hurt.

Witnesses said the man was reportedly a Myanmar national and may have been distressed while searching for his wife, although this has not been independently confirmed.

The Joint Committee on AI, after the most careful consideration of its terms of reference, will of course conclude that this is not primarily a policy question but a technical cybersecurity incident. It therefore refers the matter to the Australian Signals Directorate.

The Signals Directorate, having conducted a thorough operational review, will observe that while they can count packets and inspect logs, questions of intent, foreign capability, and whether an American model “didn’t accept no for an answer” raise potential national security implications. They therefore refer it to ASIO.

ASIO, after the appropriate inter-agency consultations, will note that this does not appear to be a traditional security threat so much as unauthorised access to a government statistics portal. Criminality, if any, is a matter for the AFP. Policy settings for frontier models are not their remit. They thus refer it to the Attorney-General’s Department.

The Attorney-General’s Department will confirm that possible offences exist in theory, but enforcement, regulation of AI agents, and “whole-of-government posture” sit with Home Affairs and the National Cyber Security Coordinator. They consequently refer it onward.

Home Affairs will explain that Medicare systems are administered by Services Australia, while AI safety and model alignment are the province of the Office of AI and the AI Safety Institute. They refer it there.

The Office of AI and the AI Safety Institute will then discover, with some surprise, that the incident raises profound questions of parliamentary oversight, legislative settings, and public confidence in artificial intelligence. These are, they will conclude, matters properly examined by the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence. It is thus referred back to where it began.

The Committee receives the referral with gratitude. It notes that the matter has now been fully considered by all relevant agencies: "I think we can safely say the situation is in hand. Nothing has been decided. Everything has been referred. The public has been reassured. And no one, least of all the committee, has had to take a stand or make a courageous decision. Yes, Prime Minister."
