“Nephi didn’t mess up! It was a learning experience. Line upon line, precept upon precept, he was being prepared to go back, not knowing beforehand the things that he should do.”
“Do your best! Heaven is in charge.”
—Elder David A. Bednar
“Mormons turned a swamp into a metropolis. Then they turned a desert into an empire. It’s the most American story.”
Their religious beliefs take them to Missouri. Neighbors learn they are anti-slavery and violently drive them out.
They go to Illinois and turn a swamp into a city that rivals Chicago. Only to have violent mobs run them out.
They walk toward Utah. Hoping to find a safe place to gather.
Jim Bridger mocks them. He bets $1,000 they can’t grow crops in Utah. They continue anyway.
The Utah soil is so hard it breaks their plows. So they engineer a way to water a desert.
Their crops grow. Salt Lake City sprawls. They expand. Latter-day Saints settle 500 towns across the West. A network of farms, commerce, and faith.
Their women become the first women to vote. They elect America’s first female state senator.
Their women organize themselves. With very little training, they create a system that lowers infant mortality to among the lowest rates in the country.
When the Depression hits, Latter-day Saints implement the most effective welfare program in the country. Decades later, Ronald Reagan studies it and calls it a model for the country. Its impact is seen today as Utah has the lowest usage of federal food assistance in the country.
The pursuit of knowledge and science becomes a hallmark. They start universities. They send their smartest men and women back east to learn the latest ideas and bring them back.
They are innovative. Technology that changes the world emerges from their culture. The television. The artificial heart. The weapons that won WWII. The beginnings of the internet.
The work ethic and cooperation that propelled them to develop the American West continues today. Their outsized influence on the world is famous.
They know religious persecution better than most. So they champion religious freedom for all, even those they disagree with.
Sociologists are obsessed with their outcomes. A Princeton researcher studied teens in America. She concluded that “Mormon teens are faring best.” Harvard data recently found that kids who grow up in Latter-day Saint homes are the most likely to say they feel loved by both parents. Other national studies consistently find them to be the happiest people in the country.
Gallup finds they are the most observant Christians in the country, a dedication to their faith that is unrivaled. Pew Research finds they know many Bible stories better than any other Christians.
A swamp became a metropolis. A desert became an empire. A persecuted people became the happiest in America. That’s the most American story ever told.
Team USA captain Christian Pulisic led America to win 4-1 in the World Cup opener.
He is a devout Christian, holds Bible studies with teammates, and openly credits God for carrying him through difficult times
Christianity produces excellence. ✝️
Sometimes trusting the Lord means letting Him reshape the plans you once felt sure about.
Follow Him when the path is clear—and when it isn’t.
He knows you perfectly and understands your needs completely.
There may be times when you may think of other, more capable people who could more successfully accomplish what you have been called to do.
The counsel I shared with students at @byuhawaii this weekend applies to all of us. Remember that the Lord put you here, now. And He did it for a reason. This is your season. You may not see the reason clearly now, but faith requires that we proceed without seeing—trusting the Lord.
Let us not get discouraged or frustrated when things don’t go perfectly. We are all a work in progress. Through Jesus Christ, we will be able to become our best selves and accomplish the work God wants us to do.
Even active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may sometimes have concerns about some historical, doctrinal, or social issues connected with the Church. I want to help all our members overcome present or future doubts.
Whatever those doubts, the way to overcome them is to get closer to our Savior Jesus Christ. Again and again, He has taught us that He is the way.
Students, faculty and staff, as well as community representatives and leaders, crowded the 19,000-seat Marriott Center in Provo, Utah, for the late-morning devotional. Students lined up as early as 6:30 a.m. in a queue that stretched to the Provo Missionary Training Center. As the close to 20,000 voices in the audience sang “We Thank Thee, Oh God, for a Prophet” to begin the meeting, the walls and seats of the Marriott Center hummed.
President @OaksDallinH' remarks, which he said apply to “all who follow the words of a prophet,” were also streamed to BYU–Idaho, BYU–Hawaii and Ensign College campuses and broadcast on https://t.co/fuc07c0yRM and https://t.co/rWFZ3lNs9p.
The event was the first time the new Church President has spoken at a devotional since being set apart as the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Oct. 14, 2025
This civil rights historian just called Joseph Smith “Lincoln before Lincoln.” So what does this white Latter-day Saint prophet have to do with black civil rights?
A portrait of the Prophet Joseph Smith was added to the International Hall of Honor in Morehouse College’s Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel in Atlanta, Georgia, on Sunday, February 1, 2026.
The hall includes more than 300 oil portraits of global leaders of the international civil and human rights movement. A portrait of the late President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was added to the historically Black college’s hall in 2023. Joseph’s portrait will go between President Nelson and Abraham Lincoln.
One significant way Joseph Smith advocated for basic rights for all came during his presidential run of 1844. While weaving in excerpts from the Book of Mormon and the text of the Prophet’s presidential platform, the Rev. Dr. Lawrence Edward Carter Sr., dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, called Smith’s plan to abolish slavery “among the most morally ambitious proposals of the antebellum era.”

Formal request for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I am just a devout member who sustained enthusiastically the Brethren.
But may I humbly suggest that you buy the gateway, and create a BYU Salt Lake campus
Fill it with 10,000 Latter-day Saint students and save the city with the updated demographics of Salt Lake.
Heard this today & it stung a bit. I need to do better. Picking people apart doesn’t require much skill or intelligence. I want to build and inspire.
Imagine if every 18-year-old spent two years doing this:
– Quit video games
– Wake up at 6:30 AM
– Talk to strangers daily
– Study Jesus daily
– Pray multiple times a day
– Serve others regularly
– Lead teams
The Latter-day Saint missionary experience is transformative.
I’ve spent real time investigating other faiths. Catholicism, evangelical Christianity, Judaism, Islam, even Buddhism. I’ve studied the Bible closely, read the Qur’an, explored the Torah, the Bhagavad Gita, and other religious writings with an open mind and honest intent.
What I kept coming back to is this: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only place where the doctrine, covenants, priesthood authority, and lived experience all line up for me. It does not just teach me about Christ. It binds me to Him through covenants, gives structure to repentance and grace, and answers the deepest questions I actually live with.
That conclusion did not come from tradition or comfort. It came from study, prayer, and years of testing what truly brings light, consistency, and change into my life.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the following statement today about the health of President Jeffrey R. Holland:
President Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is currently hospitalized for treatment related to ongoing health complications. He is receiving expert care and is with loved ones during this Christmas holiday. President @HollandJeffreyR and his family express gratitude for the many prayers offered on his behalf and extend greetings of faith and peace during this season that commemorates the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.
