When I did my housemanship at Federal Medical Centre Owerri, we had a medical director called Dr Angela Uwakwem.
Prior to our time, people were paying hundreds of thousands to get housemanship positions in that hospital, but Dr Uwakwem conducted our interview herself and nobody got that job because they paid anyone.

By the time our internship started, everyone in the hospital was talking about Angela Uwakwem. People were always on their toes because if you slack, your next salary was likely to slack as well.
She would walk into any ward and pick up patient folders at random to see what the doctors were doing for the patient. Woe betide you if a nurse had written "Doctor informed" and as the doctor, you saw the patient 2 hours later. You will answer a lot of questions.
She once entered a ward and noticed that a fan was not working. Patient said it had been like that since they were admitted. The matron in charge of that ward had issues for not reporting the fan issue to have it fixed.
Waiting period at A&E was less than an hour and you had 24 to 48 hours to either discharge a patient or admit them to the ward. I met her a couple of times at A&E when she came to ask why we still had patients in there.

Before Angela Uwakwem became the MD, doctors in ward coats would stand in front of FMC gate hustling to write medical reports for parents of students or graduates going for NYSC. She put an end to all that.
She streamlined payment system for the hospital and stopped embezzlement that came from all angles.

While she was doing all that, she was building lots of infrastructure for the hospital. Most new infrastructure in the hospital today were built or started by her because the hospital was making a lot of money then. And she sanitised the place and made it very neat.

Unfortunately, there was serious campaign against this woman. Doctors did not like her because they felt she was leaning towards JOHESU.
This same JOHESU was the union that started the Angela must go campaign. It was quite massive that the national body joined in the fight to get rid of her.
They called her all sorts of names.
I remember at that time when they gathered for their "prayer sessions" against her, if a goat passed by, they'll start chasing it saying Angela had sent it.
Anybody that said anything good about her was branded "sabo".
It got so bad that even if you were in a keke in Owerri, the topic would be how bad Angela was.
Hospital was shut down for over 6 months until she was removed.

After the woman left FMC, everything changed. We started seeing severe power outage. We were using phone light to suture episiotomy.
Basic items like gloves and syringes became unavailable and we started sending patients out to buy medications from pharmacies. That's when we started seeing antibiotic brands like Obinnazole and Kenechukwucef.
Hospital staff were buying and repackaging gloves to sell to patients.

It's been over 10 years now and I hope things are better in the hospital. But thinking back on this just shows how difficult it is for things to get better in Nigeria. It takes a couple of people who are benefiting from a corrupt system to incite others to fight you when you're trying to effect changes.
