This past Monday was a significant day for my family.

I was honored to attend the Change of Command ceremony for the United States Navy’s Carrier Strike Group 2, on board the USS Eisenhower, in which my brother assumed command.

A change of command ceremony is not entirely new to me; I grew up attending several as my dad, a Naval aviator like my brother, had his own change of command ceremonies during his time in the Navy.

Last week, Chief Justice Blacklock reminded us that lawyers and judges serve as custodians of constitutional traditions. We cannot forget that our armed forces protect that very Constitution and the ideals of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

I am so very proud of you, Scott and Dad, and thankful to all who serve and have served our country.

History was made Wednesday! The Governor signed into law the creation of five new state civil district courts for Harris County that will be up and running in September and October of 2026. The last time a state civil district court was added in Harris County was in 1983! Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen.

Dear Alistair,

We said “goodbye to you” yesterday as we celebrated your life and your incredible legacy. I am honored and fortunate you were in my life; I only object that you were taken too early.

Among the many lessons you taught me is that there is always a way to make good things happen - you just have to figure out the right path.

And no where was that more embodied than in how you responded when I came to you with almost impossible projects - like getting more civil courts in Harris County.

“Well, let’s figure out how we can do that.”

“Let’s meet over a glass of wine.”

“I know someone …”

“I’ve got it. Let me work on it.”

“Yes.”

You were a great friend and mentor. You will always be an inspiration to me and many of us to make the world better for others. The State of Texas and Harris County are so much better that you chose to live here. I promise to do whatever I can to pay that forward.
