Police K-9s put themselves in harm’s way to protect our officers and our communities.
This week, our office announced federal charges against a convicted felon accused of possessing a firearm and shooting Fort Lauderdale Police Department K-9 Appie during a pursuit.
I’m grateful for Appie’s service and for the courage and professionalism of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, ATF, and all of our law enforcement partners who work every day to keep South Florida safe.
As always, an indictment is merely an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
Here's the first-person view moment of the unsealing of the indictment against Raul Castro for ordering the murder of four Americans engaging in humanitarian flight operations over international waters.
I was seated immediately behind the families. I spoke to some of them. I cried with one of them.
Thirty years of delayed justice for their murdered loved ones.
Thirty years stained by grief and loss.
Thirty years where my own nation did not do the right thing by those brave men and their families.
But now, the reckoning for the sins of the Castro regime is at hand.
For Fidel Castro pressuring the Soviets to initiate nuclear hostilities during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
For ICAP recruiting thousands of Americans to betray their nation and serve the demonic idol of transnational Marxism.
For all of the girls and boys trafficked into sex slavery by the regime and its allies to our shores and around Latin America.
For Fidel Castro flooding our shores with thousands of violent criminals and spies under the cover of humanitarian compassion.
For the brave men of Brothers To The Rescue who were shot down by a MiG-29 dispatched by Raul and Fidel Castro to commit cold-blooded murder - Carlos Costa, Armando Alejandre, Jr, Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales.
For the millions of Americans who treasure Cuba, who have family and friends still there suffering under the brutal repression of gluttonous thugs possessed by hate.
For every person touched by the long arm of Marxist evil stretching forth from Havana...
Cuba Libre!

Fidel Castro planned to visit Seattle for December 1999 World Trade Organizational Ministerial meeting. @LincolnDBalart and his staff sent this letter to approximately 3,000 state and federal prosecutors, asking to charge and arrest Castro for BTTR murders. Because of this effort, Fidel canceled his trip. 30 years later, justice being done.
Breaking down the Raul Castro indictment with @NBCNews' @GadiNBC - a development 30 years in the making after the February 24, 1996, shoot down of two Brothers to the Rescue cessnas piloted by innocent, unarmed civilians - Mario de la Peña, Carlos Costa, Armando Alejandre, and Pablo Morales. May they rest in peace, and may justice be served. https://t.co/p7p2MykFoL
Words cannot express the emotions today at the Freedom Tower as Raul Castro’s indictment was unsealed and justice was served. But also the pride that the new generations of Cuban Americans have not forgotten the victims or that justice was long overdue @USAReding
The indictment of Raul Castro is a defining and uniting issue for south Florida, especially for the Miami Dade County, community. @SenAshleyMoody was right 3 months ago when she said it wasn’t a cold case. She, @AGJamesUthmeier , acting @DAGToddBlanche, Dep. Dir. Raia, US Atty Reding Quiñones are holding accountable those who murdered in cold blood Armando Alejandre Jr., Carlos Costa, Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales showing no American is left behind or forgotten as long as we keep shining a light on them.
🚨 The U.S. Department of Justice announces the indictment of Raúl Castro and several others with conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals.
THE UNITED STATES & PRESIDENT TRUMP WILL NOT FORGET ITS CITIZENS.
Today's criminal indictment of Raul Castro was signed by two Cuban-Americans: @USAReding & @JudgeYara.
I am incredibly proud of them for leading this pursuit of justice that is so personal and meaningful to me and everyone in the Cuban-American community. 👏
Today I had the privilege of standing with the women of justice who go beyond the call of duty to keep Miami and our nation safe.
My gratitude to First Assistant U.S. Attorney SDFL Yaras Klukas for the historic indictment of Raul Castro Ruz and his co-conspirators.
And to Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz: thank you for relentlessly protecting our communities around the clock.
These are the heroes I look up to.
The Cuban American community will forever be grateful to United States Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones @USAReding , First Assistant U.S. Attorney Yara Lorenzo Klukas @JudgeYara, and everyone involved in making today’s indictment possible for taking the courageous step that many before refused to take: bringing a criminal dictator to justice.
For decades, Raúl Castro and the Castro mafia believed they could murder innocent Americans and repress millions of Cubans without consequences. That era of impunity is beginning to collapse.
History will remember those who finally had the courage to act. 🇺🇸🇨🇺
Indicting Raul Castro with @USAReding and Chief AUSA Yara Klukas.
Long last, we are one step closer to accountability for the pre-meditated, state-sanctioned murder of the Brothers to the Rescue Pilots.
I’m grateful for these courageous lawyers and their pursuit of justice.
