Why use technology to solve problems?
- Technology is an amplifier of power. It can be scaled quickly and expontentially, independently of the number of people working on the problem.
- Out of all options, it's the most politically neutral one.
- New technology opens up new options to break through trade-offs. You can have your cake and eat it too.
- It's generally the least dependent on behavior change, which is notoriously difficult to achieve.
- While most types of solutions can oscillate (e.g. laws can be overturned, norms can degrade), technology has a direction; the path of technology looks more like a ratchet. You cannot un-invent something.
Why is all of this not obvious? Because we're blind to the impact of technology. It's said that the best design is invisible. We look at buildings and bridges as if they're a natural part of the landscape like the trees and the rivers, but they're not. They were created by humans to solve problems.
If we don't consciously recognize how the problems of the past were solved through technology, it's hard to recognize that technology could solve our problems in the future.
Antoni Gaudí was born 172 years ago today.
