Me 15 years ago, as a PhD student: “It seems like all the interesting questions have been answered & there are no useful studies left to do.”
Me now, as a funder focused on evidence-based criminal justice policy: “The biggest constraint we face is finding researchers with time to engage in important new projects.”
Truly, this is the most pressing problem I have. I need an army of scholars who understand causal methods & who would jump at an opportunity to study a program or policy. Would you like to help? Email me. 🙏
Not an easy achievement for a university that started out as a small agricultural college and had to overcome obstacles to gain entry into the Big Ten. I think we do well with our resources. We can always do better, of course.

NBER posted an RCT of the Chicago Heights (CHECC) preschool program. Quick take: The study doesn't report findings for its prespecified primary outcome - grade 3 test scores for full sample - & instead highlights positive results of an unreliable (post-hoc) subgroup analysis. 1/6

It has dawned on me that the more than one thousand problems I've written for my books, course problem sets, and exams are now just fodder for ChatGPT training.
The era of graded problem sets appears to be over -- unless one puts in a lot of effort. Too pessimistic?
