If you were wondering why they beheaded Athena's statue in The Odyssey, here's how I interpreted it.
The Greeks all worship Athena, but during the fall of Troy they kill countless innocent people, violating Zeus's law: treat strangers with respect, because they could be a god in disguise.
Throughout the film, Zendaya's character appears to Odysseus like a divine presence in his visions. Only at the end do we learn she was one of the innocent civilians killed during the sack of Troy.
That's why her death is match-cut with the beheading of Athena's statue. The film is saying that by murdering the innocent, they were symbolically killing the very goddess they claimed to worship.
