Climate change usually doesn’t cause migration directly, but it can contribute to broader factors
What does that look like? Researcher @JuliaNeusner explains on our podcast “Changing Climate, Changing Migration”
.@IRAP research finds that significant shares of asylum seekers & other migrants at the US-Mexico border experienced climate disasters. Yet #climatechange was rarely the top or sole factor for movement
Our podcast “Changing Climate, Changing Migration” spoke with @JuliaNeusner about the findings

I’m in New York for #ClimateWeekNYC but one of the things I’m most excited about is diving into this new @IRAP report by @JuliaNeusner.
Important new research on climate-related displacement in the Western hemisphere: https://t.co/YLgLgTYpDt
Excited to share that the report I wrote for @IRAP on the impacts of climate change on migrants and displaced people is out today! Based on over a year of research, it details how disasters have affected thousands of people seeking safety across borders in the Americas.
A U.S. court recently set a negative precedent for climate-displaced people seeking asylum in the U.S., but it should not dishearten proponents of expanding existing refugee protection frameworks to protect people displaced by climate change.

So proud to release this beautiful and devastating project in collaboration with the @colibricenter.
For 30 years, US border policies have killed and led to the disappearance of tens of thousands of mostly Indigenous, Brown, and Black people.
It's time for a new approach.
It was an honor to collaborate with @amaruthfrancis on this report for Columbia @SabinCenter on the intersection of climate change, mobility, and human and public health.
🚨🌏 📈 The @SabinCenter published two NEW reports on the connection between #climatechange, health impacts, and State obligations under #internationallaw.

Proud to have collaborated on this report. On #WorldRefugeeDay we must remember our obligation to protect people forced to flee for safety and endeavor to keep #asylumseekers safe as they journey from the Darien Gap to the U.S. southern border. #AsylumIsAHumanRight!"
We are proud to have partnered with @WitnessBorder, @quixotecenter, @JuliaNeusner, @ImmDef, & @redfranciscana on "DANGER IN THE DARIÉN GAP: Human Rights Abuses and the Need for Humane Pathways to Safety."
The findings provide further evidence of U.S. deterrence policies … /1 🧵
2/ People crossing the Darién Gap face severe danger and abuse. Many recount being sexually assaulted, robbed, & suffering brutal violence, often with the complicity of Panamanian government officers. For example:
16/ This #WorldRefugeeDay, we urge the Panamanian government to protect vulnerable migrants & displaced people and call on the on the US and other regional governments to create safe & regular pathways to safety for people seeking cross-border protection in the Americas.
