To understand why this lack of transparency is concerning, lets consider a similar report from the Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse report. Below, I've listed a few points to consider. 👇

- The table header uses the vague term "defendants proceeded against," which could include anyone charged or taken to court, not just those convicted. Why not focus on convictions?

- The table includes all forms of CSE, including less serious offences like image offences, which deflects attention from more severe crimes such as child rape, trafficking, and forced prostitution.

- Convictions listed do not reflect the total number of offences committed, leaving key gaps in understanding the scale of abuse.

- The authors suggest CSE within minority communities is often underreported, which skews the data and limits its reliability.

- White offenders are most often prosecuted for image offences, which dominate the overall statistics but differ significantly from organised crimes like gang rape and trafficking.

- Aggregated data obscures patterns in more severe offences, masking trends in organised grooming and exploitation.

- Ethnicity of offenders was frequently not recorded by police, leaving many cases completely absent from the data. Why is this critical information missing?

- Victims of grooming gangs have often reported indifference from officials, with their complaints ignored or dismissed, raising concerns that case that were not investigated properly will be excluded from the data entirely.
